I have both the scandi and the flat grind. My hands are on the smallish side and these two knives fit perfectly. They are not too small like most necker blades are, and are nearly as wide/thick as a standard knife blade. The leather sheaths sold for them on Thompsons are not the greatest, and I have yet to try the kydex ones. And you really can't beat the price, but they are hard to keep in stock.

I still favor the Buck 102 for a single knife to skin, hack through leg joints, and cape.

I have 2 that I keep going back to. I have a Gerber 3 blade knife (well 2 blades, lost one of them) that I just love. Its a folding knife and has a fantastic saw blade that cuts through bone and branches very well and after 20 years is still sharp. The blades are stainless and I do need to sharpen it often. My other favorite is the Cold Steel Master Hunter with the Carbon V steel. That one stays sharp a long time. Very well made. Both knives are well over 20 years old. In fact that Gerber is probable pushing 35 years old. They dont make them anymore which us too bad. I used to use an old buck antlered handle one that my grandfather made but know that one is my sons.

Knives are like boots, each of us has what works for us, which may or may not translate to another person. Simplistically, I'd suggest you want a sharp knife, (duh? Right?) more specifically, I like a knife that holds a sharp edge, BUT you can lick it up quickly with a diamond steel. So, not super hard, say like buck knives. My taste is clean classic lines, and a traditional knife not an exchange-a-blade model. Simple handles, with no grooves or funkiness are also on my list.

I tend to Scandinavian designs and currently have a Lauri blade in a handle of my design. Mora knife if you're wondering.

I still feel that a 5" boning knife is the ultimate hunting knife, after all it's what I grab at home to do 90% of my butchering

But those are my thoughts...

I have been using a Buck Alpha, and Mini Alpha fixed blades, for the last 10 years. About 5 years ago I started using the Buck Packlite. My favorite of the 3 is the Mini Alpha. It fits my hands well and my index finger lands just short of the point. I have great control with it. The length would be on the short side for an Elk. The Alpha is longer and the blade is deeper with a thicker spine. I like the Packlite for my pack though simply due to weight savings. It is fine for elk and down in my opinion. It's draw back is the lack of a handle and so it does cause some discomfort in the hand after a while. I'm toying with braiding Para Cord on it, but I'm worried about not being able to clean it well. I suppose I can just throw the para cord away at the end of the year

I've used the Packlite on 3 elk, and other than the discomfort at the end of the process it has worked well.

Last year I dressed and skinned 3 deer with the Mini Alpha, and the edge was still fine for more after the prior years sharpening. Regardless I carry 2 knives, as I always have a standard pocket knife on me.

I haven't tried the Havalon yet, but I'm seriously thinking about it. If using the gutless method I think this would be the way to go.

^^^^^^^^^^ Mini Alpha and Packlite both work great! If you like the Packlite but are not too fond of the sheath or handle, the ESEE Izula II is about perfect!

I have a buck knife tgat I got for my 12 th birthday that I still carry on every hunt I go on. I don't even know the model or anything. It's a fixed blade of about 4.25 inches with a black handle. It has handled everything I needed it to. I also have a mora that I like for 12 bucks and several folders that i squirrel away in bags and such. I like my car trapper for the folders.

Here is another replaceable blade knife.

I was buying some replacement blades for my Havalon and saw this new model from Outdoor Edge.

Razor-Lite EDC

same 3.5" blade as their other Razor Series knives. The black part of the blade stays and edge is replaceable without tools. Button releases blade. The blade is very stout.

Total wt. 2.8 oz, thumb stud, pocket clip. Solid lock up. Handle is a little different than the other Razors with tacky rubber inserts. Came with 6 extra blades. Seems to be worth the $25. Probably not an edc for me but I would carry it in my pack.
Note: for those of us used to carrying a Benchmade Mini Griptillian the blade release button on the Outdoor Edge is the same location as the lock release on the Benchmade. Could be dicey if you accidentally released the blade. The lock release on the Razor is on the back like a Spyderco.

^^^^ That's the one I was trying to describe in my first post (#15). Perfect size, SUPER sharp replaceable blades. I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have got both a razoer edge and a havalon. [gifts] and i really dont see how any one can change the blades in them and complain about one but love the other. if you cant change a havalon with out griping i dont see how the other is so easy, besides it is a lot bigger and weighs a lot more.

it is a much stronger blade, which is a realistic concern.

for about 20 years i have carried a box cutter type with the breakaway blades. just pop off a quarter inch and you have a new edge.
