Got a trip booked for 2017. For some ridiculous reason you can't bone out moose in this region. U even have to take ribs. First off.... Can I cut quarters in half? Second I was thinking of running cargo panel on duplex. Only other bag that might work is EMR 2.

Thoughts, thanks

First off while I do love my Kifaru packs, bone on moose parts are best hauler on a frame pack. The leg are as long as I am tall, I did best strapping the pieces to my Duplex frame and used a cargo panel and straps. Extra game bag for the extra pieces and bring some cheese cloth to use to pad the rib bones so they don't cut every bag you put them in.

This is my buddy and a front qtr that was folded up, that is why it looks short and it was a PITA to deal with he rigored up that way.

I picked up a cargo panel to pair with my duplex for just this reason. Has been working out pretty good to haul elk quarters so far and will hopefully get to use it a couple more times in the next week. I know an elk quarter is not the same but 2 elk quarters at a time has to be close right? Then again looking at Steve's picture of the hind quarter sitting in the cargo panel makes me think I should try for 3...

That was a front leg,, on a mature Bull moose you are looking at these weights based on the several I have been involved with.

Big bull, fully mature...

rear qtr 140 to 160

Fronts 90 to 110

25 pounds plus for each side of backstrap.. so about 50 pounds or so.

The ribs weighed about 75 pounds for each side and were one of the more difficult loads to carry.

The neck is in the 75 to 90 pound range.

The capes I have weighed were 75 to 90 pounds green.

The head and antlers could be 50 or so. My clean dry skull and antlers are 40 pounds.

Moose are more like a horse or mule for a comparative size, a small bull moose would be similar to a large Bull Elk.

Best I can recall anyway. :) Must be close since I have not been too eager to do it again. :)

Personally I find packing moose to be miserable no matter what pack I am using. :)

If I have to haul moose quarters I won't be buying a Barneys. The waistbelts don't work for me as well as Kifaru. So my EMR 2 will be used. The 3 horizontal straps and the two top lid straps hold large awkward loads quite well and you don't have to try to squeeze them inside any bag just use the straps of the EMR 2. The packbag also works well for any other type of backpack hunting from 10 day long to day hunts.....ONE BAG TO RULE THEM ALL!!!!! ;)

I guess derailing your own thread is legit so.....;)

On fly out hunts I can spare the weight I opt to bring atleast two rain jackets and leave one in base camp. Being as you are moose hunting out of bethel I am assuming you will be out of a drop base camp or float hunting. Either case an extra 1-2 pounds for an extra rain jacket to let the other dry out in base camp and alternate if needed would work fine. If you cant afford both I would say sitka stormfrony thiugh I have no personal experiece with it some of my friends really like it. That said you can get nearly 2 Westcomb eVent rain jackets for MSRP of a stormfront one. But you can also get two marmot precips for around $120 total off STP. ;).

Moose are huge. I too would vote for a barneys frame.

I bought a barneys frame hauler for bear baiting and moose hunting, the kifaru will be for every other hunt.

Thanks Luke. Good ideas. Rucker61...... I agree completely. I'm confident he is probably busy though.

This is where I'm at. I've had some issues with the Barney's belt, but had a buddy that carries one for a living help me with it and got it working fairly well. Biggest tip he gave me is that you can and should put a bit more weight on the shoulder straps with a Barney's than you would with most other frames. The shoulder straps are so big and padded, they're meant to wear like that.

I'm in a similar situation geriggs, I booked a diy moose hunt for 2018 and I'm also in the market for a Kifaru pack. I've considered the same options that you have as well as the possibility of using one of Kifaru's standard size packs such as the DT2 or Mountain Warrior paired with a grab-it and lash kit. The DT2 and Mountain Warrior to me seem like a better suited "lower 48" type of pack. When paired with the grab-it and lash kit, i feel would be adequate for bone in moose style hauling. The cargo panel and EMR2 are good options however i plan on using the pack for more "lower 48" up to ten day type of hunts then alaskan moose hunts (for now anyways). More bang for my buck for what i will be primarily using it for, just food for thought. Post up what you end up going with please:D!
