What is your favorite hunting dog and why ?

I own a Drahthaar who is a hunting machine. But as a 90% waterfowl hunter my heart seems to always return to the Chesapeake. This one isn’t terribly spectacular. Still needs a lot of work. And he has many traditional Chessie attributes....intolerant of other male dogs, fights, gets shitty with who owns the pile of ducks, marks everything with piss....but he’s my favorite

That is the best looking Chessie I’ve ever seen. Beautiful dog!

I’ve always had labs because they make great pets as well. My buddy had a Llewelyn Setter that was a great hunting dog, great with kids, and super mellow at home. First dog that made me consider making a switch.

I had a Llewelyn Setter myself. She was an amazing bird dog and wonderful friend.

I own a female chessie who isnt much different. She hates working with other dogs, gets possessive about ducks, and also likes to piss all over everything she thinks is hers. But she is the most driven, hard hunting dog I've ever been around. And yet she is smothering in her love of her humans. I routinely get woken up by a wet nose and a wagging tail. Pretty sure I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Always had springers growing up, but the wife wanted a golden. We agreed that she'd brush her out after each trip, so far that has worked out nicely.

A good dog goes a long way. I have had labs my entire life and never felt a need to go elsewhere. Personal curiosity has gotten me interested in potentially looking for a flat coated retriever. Does anyone here have one or ever had any experiences or interactions with them? I rescued a mix breed pup when I was younger and he was hands down the best dog I ever had. Closest thing I could find seemed to be a flattie.

Friend of mine had one in college we huntied behind quite a bit. Really nice dog. Pleasant to be around and was a good bird dog. Both upland and waterfowl.

I've mainly had English Pointers and that Flat Coat acted nothing like a pointer!

I’ve hunted over labs, GWP’s and Griffs. All have been great dogs with their own style. I currently have a Slovakian Wirehair and Pudelpointer now. The Slovak is a crazy hunting machine. His drive, stamina and heart is incredible. The nice thing about him is he has an off button in the house.
