Nothing mythical about a wolverine. However, looking at maps for the animals range it looks like they are no longer found in California. Making it unlikely to be a wolverine.
The front looks too heave in relation to the back to be a skunk. The front shoulders are at the same height as the back hips, skunks have a back that slopes forwards. Likewise, I have never seen a skunk with a light patch on its chest (of course that does not mean there aren't any).
Of course cameras can distort things and something that is hard to identify in such a situation is more likely to be something common, which argues for it being a skunk.
