What is this animal?

My first thought was a bear cub, I don’t know why I didn’t think skunk at first. I guess I thought the white stripe was just a weird glare.

Nothing mythical about a wolverine. However, looking at maps for the animals range it looks like they are no longer found in California. Making it unlikely to be a wolverine.

The front looks too heave in relation to the back to be a skunk. The front shoulders are at the same height as the back hips, skunks have a back that slopes forwards. Likewise, I have never seen a skunk with a light patch on its chest (of course that does not mean there aren't any).

Of course cameras can distort things and something that is hard to identify in such a situation is more likely to be something common, which argues for it being a skunk.

On second look, I say skunk. I was thinking the tail on the right hand side of the first picture was a head.

I think the cam being on the ground distorts the actual image size- but based on where you got the pic from and that distinct white mark I am going to say skunk too.
