What Happened to Sitka?

I’m a Sitka whore when they go on sale. Just bought my 2nd Dakota hoody. Love that fricking thing. Was here in 3 days. Wife was like really? You need two?
Yep.

I have no idea who those people are of why they are the pillar upholding the clothing company everyone judges anything against.

Yea... No idea why anyone cares what this guy thinks...

Just saw in the recent MKC videos with Barklow that he is running Arc'teryx base layers and BP pants. If he leaves Sitka, I cannot imagine them remaining very relevant. He is the last thread at the company.
Not saying hes not leaving, but I have seen John wear other company clothes in the past and he has said so himself on a podcast.

There are thousands of Navy Seals, many thousands of other special forces personnel. The entire performance clothing industry was spawned by someone who was neither. I've found the training I've done with seals helpful, but they are not Gods.

Sitka needs to:
A). Stop discontinuing gear after it has only been out maybe a year or two.
B) Make all your similar type clothing (shell, pants etc) fit the SAME so there is no guesswork
C) Focus a core product family (Jetstream, Mountain Pants etc) and quit with the windstopper blankets, ridiculous over priced boots, and the gaggle of trucker hats.

Sitka made some great stuff before he was there; I’m sure they still can if he isn’t. It’s not exactly rocket science; base layer, mid layer, shell, some insulation pieces.

I image Barklow is close to retiring

26 years with DOD, and 10 years with Sitka I think he has more then earned it.

Anyone else seeing a lot of the romances that had discount Sitka not having any clearance or old stuff anymore? Almost feels like they are pulling the plug on all the outlets to do it themselves

Sitka is owned by wl gore. Barklow works for sitka, therefore for gore. Arcteryx, etc are important customers of gore. He’s flying the flag of gore by wearing products made from wl gore fabrics, regardless of what logo is on it.
There's one brand in the outdoor space I refuse to support, wear or even pay attention to - it's Arcteryx.

It's effectively owned by the CCP.

Arcteryx is managed in Vancouver, BC Canada. But, it's parent company Amer Sports (who owns Salomon, Wilson, Atomic & Armada) is operated out of Finland; however, Amer Sports is owned by Anta Sports.

Anta Sports is the worlds largest sports brand, valued around $30 billion. It's wholly Chinese.

Long-story short, the only reason Arcteryx (via Amer) is publicly traded on the NYSE is because Anta owed Chinese investors (around) 60M yen a quarter in debt repayments from the original acquisition of Amer.

In order for Anta Sports to clear the debt, they pushed Amer Sports to IPO / issue public shares so Anta could pay back the bonds.

Chinese companies don't go through the same due diligence and don't have the same GAAP requirements. Amer's cap table is almost exclusively Chinese holding companies. Page 176 - https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1988894/000110465924010053/tm2322981-18_424b4.htm#tPRSH

I avoid purchasing things made in China, as best I can - thankfully, a lot of KUIU and SG is made in Vietnam, et al. But, without a question - I'll never purchase anything from a Chinese-owned brand. Or, give money back to Chinese holding companies.

Has nothing to do with this thread - wanted to share, I saw same video and thought "if folks knew about Arcteryx's ownership, would they support the brands as much as they do?"

Yep, thats old news since arcteryx was sold for the ?? time in 2019. A huge majority of the apparel in the outdoor industry is made in china, many of the best factories used by most of the top brands are Chinese, and because of that many of the raw material suppliers are there too. With asia also having a massive economy and very high growth, a lot of companies are choosing to continue making things there in part because the proximity of fabric suppliers to factories shortens the already crazy-long timelines, simplifies logistics and cuts costs, as well as because it puts the goods close to one of their largest and fastest growing markets. Thats perhaps only tangentially related to this thread, but its highly relevant for wl gore, therefore relevant for sitka.

Great point. I used to love Arcteryx, even have some of their early Canada made stuff. Completely avoid them now, outside of picking up some used/second-hand stuff occasionally. I am not trying to give our enemies $700 for a jacket it cost them $3 to make.
