What do you wish you knew going into your first guided moose hunt?

Have a trip coming up with Caesar Lake. Now Backcountry BC and Beyond. Their website seems to be incredibly thorough, but Spending a bit on it and want everything to be perfect. Everything from travel to gear to animal selection and taxidermy. Likely won't be able to make this trip happen again so want to make the most of it!

A good attitude. Patience and not questioning everything the guide is doing compared to how the internet warriors say it should be done. Is a good start

My lessons from Alaska fly in trips are packing light and expect rain and cool weather. Being in reasonable shape with good flexibility to get into and out of bush planes. Helpful around camp and listening to your guide is a good start. Enjoy the adventure and good luck!

I moose hunted the Yukon last year. I'm pretty sure my guide told me he was working for Caesar Lake this year. He was a great guy and a helluva hunter. Keep a positive attitude and stay engaged while glassing. Be very patient with all aspects related to the horses.

If you are flying avoid Air Canada if you can, they lost a gear bag on the way to British Columbia. We had a weather delay flying out on the float plane and I was able to retrieve the bag the following day (it did not arrive on the next flight). They lost our guns on the way home.

It’s funny you say that. Just got back from a bear hunt where they lost all of our bags and we never got them. Wore the same clothes 7 days and somehow still managed to kill a bear w guides old bow. Was a trip from hell and that’s having me stress like crazy about logistics for this trip.

When I told everybody what happened at moose camp, they weren’t surprised at all. I assumed Air Canada was like Alaska Airlines. The guides at camp recommended Canada North. We have a trip coming up to the Northwest Territories next year. We are gonna drive to Edmonton and then fly to Norman Wells.

Make sure you know what a good bull looks like and don't feel pressured to shoot the first one you see. I have seen smaller bulls the guide "misjudged" that got shot on the first day and ended with a disappointed hunter.

You are not ordering a bull from Amazon, but all moose look huge and you don't want your dream hunt to end early and bring regret.

Talk to your guide and get on the same page. If you trust him though, don't pass a true shooter the first or second day. You kill them when you can.

I imagine you know this already, but everything will not “be perfect “. Animals and weather are not always predictable. Outfitters and guides are human and will make mistakes. Airlines do what airlines do, and it’s not always good. Good idea, though, to control the things that you can.

Take along a good attitude and a sense of humor. It sounds like you’ve picked a good outfitter and should have a good experience in good country. You’re paying for an adventure and not buying an animal. I hope you get good weather and get a chance at a big one.

Don’t bring a tape measure. Who cares if another hunter kills one that is an inch and a half wider. Who cares if another hunter kills on day 2 and everyone else kills on day 6? Enjoy the moment. Happy hunting, TheGrayRider.

Hunted goats with BC&Beyond a few years back. Had a great time. Awesome guides and delivered everything promised plus some.
dream of going back again someday for moose/caribou. Have a great trip.
