What did you do in the reloading room today?

Prepping 500 pieces of 223 brass to load the next few nights. Gotta keep the 223 trainers fed!

I decided to try the powder thrower for bulk 6GT.
Went with the following:
107tmk
Fed GM205M Primers
2.550” COAL

  • 40.0gr SB65 (thrown charge 2.68cc):
  • 35.0gr Leverevolution (thrown charge 2.31cc):
  • 33.0gr Varget:
Will shoot tomorrow after work for groups and chrono data.
Are you using a manual thrower? If so, does it play nice with the Varget?

yes, Lee deluxe manual powder thrower. The Varget was a little crunchy with every sweep of the arm.
The staball and lever were completely frictionless.

TBD how the consistency turns out. It’s gusting 50mph right now, so I’ll go out and shoot tomorrow.

Loaded up some 6.5 Grendel 107 TMKs for a Howa mini, using Sierra’s max bolt gun data. Plenty of room in the Maxwell (shown) for even longer bullets, but the TMK’s boat tail is too long for me to get any further out than I am.

I Shot them in the yard to get an idea of speed, they chrono’d at 2735 FPS avg. from a 16” barrel.

Made 50 rounds of 6.5PRC as good as I can make them (and as good as I am willing to make them). Trimmed every piece of brass to within +/- .0005 (every piece measured), deburred, chamfered, annealed, shoulder bumped .0015 (every piece measured), set neck tension to .002 using a mandrel, set primers using a Derraco PCPS with .004 of crush +/- .001 (every piece measured), dropped powder double measured to +/- .02 grains, seated every bullet to a measured +/- seating depth of .001 of target.

I don't believe that this level of precision will make a meaningful difference out to the distance I shoot (1,000 yards) but I wanted to see what this would do to the ES and SD of muzzle velocity. Rounds made for this rig.

Results are in. 8.6 fps ES, 3.5 fps SD.

This is the first batch I have loaded with the Derraco PCPS. Otherwise all the reloading equipment remained unchanged. The "recipe" remained the same. Interestingly my velocity on this load jumped on average 26 fps. Perhaps the .004 crush on the primers is providing better ignition?

3.5 SD for 50 rounds is incredible.

Put together some Lee carbide 9mm dies on the progressive.

Ended up loading 3 different bullets types to test out OAL, velocity, feeding reliability, etc.

Also set up a lee deluxe powder thrower with micrometer. I learned that different powders have a specific weight-volume coefficient, that lets you dial in exactly the volume for a given weight based charge. No more turning dials blindly, then checking weight, then repeating, just to edge closer to the desired charge.

124gr XTP
124gr Berrys flat nose
124gr Xtreme plated round nose.
All charged at 5.2gr by volume of CFE-Pistol.

Have a chance to shoot these yet?
I've done a little bit with CFE-Pistol in 9mm recently, coincidentally also ended up at 5.2 gr with Berry's 124 FP. Had some feeding issues at 1.150", backed them down to 1.125" and that was fine thru 50 test rounds so I loaded up two peanut butter jars worth (500).

I wish I could say it was 50. I corno'd 10 then went to run the PRS course.
Those are still incredible numbers for a 10 shot group, especially in a PRC. I was definitely expecting 3-5 shot sample. Great work and consistent loading!

*ETA: What bullet and powder? That might be the tightest data I've ever seen for a PRC..

Yeah, I’ve put about 700 of those reloads through a couple guns since that post.

For the 124gr bullets I settled on 5.0gr CFE-Pistol.
I set the seating die to hit 1.060” with the XTP. Then didn’t touch it after that. That setting puts round nose 124’s at 1.114”image.jpg
And flat nose 124’s at 1.0185”. image.jpg

All 3 passed the plunk test in all my 9mm guns, so that’s what I’ve run with.

So far they’ve all fed without any issue.

Here’s what I’ve collected on velocity out of a 5” 1911 barrel:
  • 5.25gr CFE-P. (0.39cc)
  • 124gr XTP. 1.060”: 1225(5”) 1200(4.25”)
  • 124 Berrys flat nose: 1194fps
  • 124 Xtreme round nose: 1162fps

  • 4.875gr CFEP. (0.36 cc)
  • 124gr XTP: 1108fps
  • 124gr Xtreme RN: 1064fps

  • 5.0gr CFEP. (0.37cc)
  • 124gr XTP: 1139fps
  • 124gr Xtreme RN: 1118fps
  • 124gr Berry’s FN: 1157fps

I loaded 50 of the latest plinking round for my 338-284, which are generally whatever the cheapest seconds I can find are when I’m running low. These are a 225 flat base soft point. Sierra pro hunter maybe? Guessed on a mildish charge of h4895 hoping for 23-2400 from the 16” barrel and shot a dozen over a couple grain range. All shot well and if aggregated would have been around an inch and a half. Loaded the rest in the middle of the range at 2340ish. Should work great for positional practice 300 and in.

Going forward CFE-Pistol seems like it will be my go to choice for 9mm and 45. It’s cheap, locally available, meters well, and burns clean. It’s bulky enough that I can easily catch double charges.
And the best charges seem to line up with whole numbers:
9mm:
147: 4gr
124: 5gr
115: 6gr

45auto:
230gr: 6gr
200gr: 7gr (with 6.5gr being a super soft min power factor load)

Berger 140 VLD, Lapua Brass, CCI LRM, 4831SC, 26" Benchmark Palma, Lone Peak action.

Just got back from the range.
The thrown Varget shot great.
Acceptable ES and SD. Seems like it would be an easy bulk load. And you always know you can trickle the same charge if you REALLY need perfect ES and SD.
