What clothes should we buy before PFAS regulations?

Without getting into the politics or environmental effects of PFAS chemicals, it appears that they are eventually going to be outlawed in the US. I'm not a material expert, so I'm trying to figure out what pieces I should add or stock up on prior.

What clothing technologies are going to be going away due to this?

I'm going to start researching and reaching out to companies and will add them to the lists below.

PFAS materials:
Goretex
eVent
Visp (Enlightened Equipment)

non-PFAS materials:
Vertice (Zpacks)
eVent BIO

Why would you want to hoard that stuff? Are you a fan of cancer?
I wouldn't consider myself a fan of cancer but my Crispi boots use goretex so I would say I am a fan of dry feet.

I was unaware of this so I may be picking up a couple pairs or boots. If only they still made the original Valdres...

I’d get some rain gear for sure. Hearing people on the inside talk about it, performance is definitely going to suffer.

With that said, I don’t think anyone that’s wanting to make money is going to come out and say our product now uses inferior treatment. The switch will be made as quietly as possible.

I’ve got a rain gear set from kuiu that I’ve had for 5 or 6 years. It’s made in Vietnam and has kept me bone dry through need your head checked for hunting in this type of rain. I recently bought the exact same jacket in a solid to wear around town. It’s now made in china. Haven’t had a chance to test its performance compared to the older one. The cut and sewing is slight different between the two as well.

A few months ago, I picked up a discontinued rain jacket from Black diamond. I forget the name, but it’s a heavier, duty jacket, and uses Gore-Tex pack light. I don’t know if the chemical we’re talking about is just in the DWR or if it’s in the membrane itself. This was a $300 jacket I picked up for $85, so yes I would definitely keep an eye out for products that are getting discontinued just for the money savings of nothing else.

Are the PFAS the new global warming? Maybe the new Covid or maybe the new war on terror?

Every couple of years the “experts” tell us that they have to save us and they have to do it right now. They then create a fistful of onerous laws and regulations that only later we find out it was all a mistake or grossly exaggerated

No it’s not, but it’s a forever toxin that will give you cancer. I am a Firefighter and we are more exposed to pfas chemicals than the average person. The cancer rates amongst firefighters would agree that pfas is pretty bad for you and you should definitely try to mitigate how much exposure you have. This is coming from strong conservative who doesn’t vacc and what not…

Same here. To the point that we even get a blood test for it annually. Most of our PFAS exposure allegedly came from AFFF. It’s in my bloodstream, but I’m truly not concerned by the levels of exposure from goretex or the like.

I see that turnout manufacturers are attempting to move away from the PFAS, but I’ve never seen a study that proves it leeches on to the body that way. Call me skeptical, but I wonder what the replacement will be, and how long it will take us to realize that it is as bad or worse than what we had previously.

Do you have any bonafide data showing a pair of boots with say gore tex will lead to me getting cancer.

I mean you pump gas don’t ya? Ever smell gas fumes while pumping gas? Well guess what it’s a known carcinogen too but you’ll do that right? People smoke even though it says it causes cancer right on the box. I’d bet a pair of boots absolutely will NOT decrease my life expectancy a single minute. I’m not ingesting the gore tex in my boots.

Put the stupid “these boots are known to the state of California to cause CA” label on the boots and move on. I saw that on some lead sinkers this summer. I still used em to catch some trout.

Would it not need to soak into your skin from direct contact? We all wear layers so the chances of it coming into direct skin contact is extremely low. I wonder what the real reason for the ban is...

This is interesting to me, I get the whole wanting to be “safe” honestly though. My rain coat and boots are least of my worries. There are about a million other items, things, food, water type of stuff I worry about… I think rain gear would be top of the list, followed by boots. Not sure if this will hit down or synthetic down much. But I tend to wear wool/ natural fibers close to the body but nothing stops wind/rain like goretex
