What bullet did you use this year?

139 Scenar @ 3035fps from a PRC, just over 200yds on a mature muley buck. Bullet acted as the 139’s always have for me, caliber in and bullet found under opposite hide, slushy vitals. I’ve had probably 25% exit on deer and bears, they act like a slightly tougher Berger.

Two does and a black bear with 45 cal 200gr sst sabots out of my inline muzzleloader. The bear dropped on impact the two does fan 40-50 yards each leaving a good blood trail.
Four does with a 95 Berger classic hunter out of a 6mm Rem. 180-470 yards the furthest track was 50 yards.
Two does with a 90 absolute hammer out of a 25-06. 180-200 yards impact, only one ran 40 yards leaving a good blood trail.

120 grain 7mm-08 Barnes Vor-TX. Double lung, white tailed deer, went 40 yards.
In the past, I used the same gun and ammo for a pronghorn at 250 yards, a mule deer at 367 yards, and a cow elk at 250 yards. I recovered the bullet from the cow elk. It had expanded to 14mm, and it retained 94% of its original weight. Nine years ago, I used the same ammo, in 165 grains, 300-win mag on a bull moose at 335 yards. Also, double lung, it was a puddle inside when field dressed and it died 15 yards from where i shot it. I use that ammo in 5 different calibers. I find it to be very accurate and effective for me.

Black tail buck at 360yds, never moved. Rocky Mountain spike at 900yds, went 20 yards. Both 1 shot with 180 eldm at 2900fps.

3 whitetail this year using the 170gr Hornady Interlock in 350 Legend. Wife’s doe hit at 40 yards, made it 30 before piling up. Shot a doe at 80 yards, double lung, again went about 30 yds after the shot. 8pt at 95 yds quartering to me. Bullet took the top of the heart out and bottom of both lungs. Buck ran 60 yds +/- before going down. All three deer the bullet passed through and blood trails were great. This was my first year using the Hornady American Whitetail ammo. We had previously been using the Barnes TSX but got tired of paying $50 for a box of 350 legend. For a lower cost bullet I was more than happy with the results.

133gr berger elite hunter 2,890fps on a pronghorn @ 362yds, broadside. Turned lungs to soup. DRT
160gr Accubond 3,060fps bull elk @ 235yds steep downhill. In ribs and out brisket for three shots. Died 20yds from first shot but lived longer than I liked to see.

130 TMK -

1) Cow Elk 300 yards - 2285fps impact (16” barrel)

2) Black bear 30-40 yards - 2670fps impact

3) Cow Elk 70 yards - 2600fps impact

This is my second season using the rifle/bullet combo. The combo has killed 4 elk and one bear. The bullet is highly effective terminally, but it does disperse fragments further than I thought and it does waste meat. A shoulder hit is a totally wasted shoulder or two. Even though on my elk this year I hit lungs then liver, a large piece of frag was spit out eating backstrap steak. Makes me re-think about how much lead is being dispersed into the food my family eats.

I am heavily considering developing a Hammer load for next year for this rifle. It’s hard to walk away from a 10 shot sub MOA and totally deadly combo though.

.45 285gr Powerbelt ELR from an Accura MR-X with 80gr Volume of BH209 on an Antelope at 382 yards. Pass through with caliber entry and half dollar sized exit. Near perfect shot, and he walked about 10 yards and tipped over. I was impressed with how well it seemed to upset at that velocity given the exit hole and internals.

140gr Factory Norma Whitetail soft points from my sons 6.5 creedmoor on a muley buck at 358 yards. One shot, hit a little high and caught spine, but dropped him and he was dead in seconds. The soft bullet hitting the spine was explosive and shredded the vitals.

143gr ELD-X from a 6.5 PRC. Using N565 and going 2993fps at the muzzle. 407 yards on mule deer buck. Pass through on a quartering away shot. I've now used this load for the last couple of years on mule deer and coues deer at ranges from 780 to 32 yards. I've been impressed with the relatively consistent terminal performance across those impact velocities.
