With 370k miles on my T100 I'm finally starting to shop around for a replacement. And for me these newer generation of trucks are just way to big for the trails I most often find myself on. Not real sure how I end up with anything other than a Taco but I'm still gonna look at most everything out there.

So, IMO, if you can afford a Raptor or a Power Wagon and you're trails are mostly in desert or open country then go for it. And WOW, you've got yourself one badass 4X4!

But, if on the other hand, you run into me on a NW muddy jungle trail don't expect me to get out of the way just because you have the wrong truck for the job at twice the expense.

That's not a jab at anyone here but it happens to me all the time and I'm sort of getting sick of it. 60k and a huge truck does not give you the right of way on a single track jeep trail!!!

I stick to logging roads in the PNW...boot leather does the rest.

Have two friends with the 1500 eco diesel and both love 'em. Personally, I'd stick with a gas motor in the 1500 or go all the way and get a full sized rig with a Cummins if you need the diesel.

I'm not a fan, only good thing about the truck is mileage on the hwy. Grant it all deisels seem to have issues with new emissions but 1/2 ton dodge seems to have a bunch of issues. Buddies is in shop for the third time all emissions DEF stuff.

Toss in the added weight of the engine I'd stick with gas if you are off pavement a bunch.

Is there any argument for the 1500 over the 2500 size truck (from an offroader's perspective)?

Guy at work has it and absolutely loves it. If I were to buy a dodge it would be that. I plan on picking up a new jeep truck they are going to release in a few years but I will be giving serious look at the 1500 diesel.

I have a 2006' PowerWagon regular cab 5.7 Hemi with 8' bed. 4.56 gears. My average fuel mileage is 10.2 mpg. Towing a 23' Contender from Florida to Louisiana I got 7.3 mpg average. Now that it's in Alaska I gotta say it's not much fun trying to accelerate from any stop on icy roads. You have to have finesse and delicate toes of a ballerina to get the thing moving without spinning rubber. It's for sale if anyone is interested...

Still looks like this.

Yes ride and weight. On maintained road just ride, 1/2 ton wins unless you spend some money on a suspension system like Carli. On a non-maintained road you will just get stuck closer to the maintained road in a 3/4. I drive 3/4 ton diesel.

I have two friends with eco diesels, and have driven one for a weekend. One is a drywaller, tows a 10' enclosed trailer at least 100 miles daily. He has tracked his mileage since day one on fuelly. His avg mpg over 80k miles is 24 mpg. Towing a trailer. It hasn't been to the shop once for warranty. The other friend is a general contractor, he tows less with it, but does tow a dump trailer every once in a while. He has about 40 on his and told me his average is about 22. That's pretty damn good IMO

I also drove a Titan xd for a bit. Seems like a super nice pickup, and a neighbor of mine is the sales manager at the local nissan, said they can't keep them in stock, and are having very few warranty issues with them.

I have a 12 3500 Cummins. I spent about 4k on a Carli suspension system. With airbags, it doesn't affect the towing capacity at all. But off road is increased tenfold. I would put my pickup up against a raptor ford any day. The Carli is an amazing kit.

That's a big expense in long term, like $750-$1,000/yr in added fuel costs. With the savings I could put a lift, aftermarket bumpers w/ winch on it and still save 20K. The Nissan Titan XD is a nice middle-ground option between the 1500 & 2500 as well, just hate the exterior look of it. The interior is sweet! And it's a Cummings. But that 3.0L eco diesel with a 700 mile per tank fuel rating is damn attractive and the consumer reviews are stellar. Why they can't put that in the Rebel woth a comparable suspension platform as the PW is beyond me. It's not a big engine.

I would not get the new Nissan, first model year of anything I would stay away from. It's also spendy for the specs, and I agree I'm not a fan of the exterior, although it does look better in person.
Bruce have you went to a dealership and asked why? They might build one special order, or put the suspension upgrades on the outdoorsman package which the Eco is a available in. I find it hard to believe they would turn down 45k

Edit It looks like you can get the Eco engine, with a locking rear and skids underneath on pretty much any model besides the rebel.

They won't. Each truck is assembled in a different place. Might just look for a low mileage, used RAM 1500 LIMITED CREW CAB 4X4 W/ 6'4" BOX and upgrade from there.

Personally I would have a hard time dropping 60K on one, if I spending that much im getting a brand new 2500 or 3500 fully laramine.

Like mentioned before it depends what your doing with the truck. My next will be a diesel 3/4 or 1 ton so I can tow a 5th wheeler camper. Right now if I wanted a "off road" truck again I would build another Toyota and have a diesel to tow it with.

Have you looked at the GMC Canyon SLT? Pretty much is a Denali so interior trim is amesome. Comes with a rear locker in the 2.8L diesel, getting 24mpg mixed driving and over 30mpg hwy in stock configuration. Duramax tuner has a tune that adds 50+hp and 80ft/lbs torque (and keeps factory emissions in place) which is close to the non high output cummins 24v in the early 2000's 3/4 ton dodges and within the limits of the factory transmission in it.

Add a 6" rough country lift and aftermarket tires, pretty sweet truck.

6in Suspension Lift Kit for 2015-2016 4wd Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon Pickups | Rough Country Suspension Systems(R)

I need a full size truck and looked at the SIERRA DENALI 4WD CREW CAB, STANDARD BOX...was over 60K w/ options I want. Still not liking the exterior. Always attracted to Dodge for some reason there.

The way gas motors are today those that rarely pull really don't need them. By the time you figure in oil and fuel filter changes it adds up more. The DEF is a pain in the ass too.

Another thing that most don't consider is if you are goin off road then likely a diesel isn't the best option to begin with. Unless it's built for it.

Im in the boat of needing a new truck but I can't make up my mind. And spending 55k on a truck hurts my noggin. I want a diesel as I've had enough of pulling with a gas Truck the last 10 years to assure I want more power. But the price tags make it a thought to just buy gas again.
