Gonna be going to Montana for my first elk hunt, gonna archery unless the tag isn't filled in September. I don't have any experience hunting elk so I'm wondering what to look for when e-scouting. I won't be able to scout any before the hunt. What type of vegetation should I look for? Thick woods, Meadows. Whats something to look for for bedding and feed. Gonna try to hunt Western Montana with a general unit, but don't have any specific units picked out yet. Just looking for anything that could help with trying to understand how elk operate. Thanks

ElkNut app has a lot of solid content beyond calling in the Tactics section that would be worth consulting as well. Have also enjoyed listening to various podcasts that share some good preseason scouting insights. Good luck!

Make sure to research hunting in grizzly country. Good luck hunting.

Timber to sleep and fields to eat in. Alot of times a nice private property hay field. Someone mentioned elk nut app, also look at elk 101, and I've heard good things about Roe hunting recourses also an app. get go hunt, watch randy newbergs YouTube videos on e-scouting. Google search Rocky mountain elk habitat, maybe pick up a biology based elk related book or e-book. You could also use the search function at the top of rokslide to see what responses the other 500 guys that have asked a similar worded question got. (weather it's from 2014 or last week, if it's about elk behavior its still relevant). Fill a spiral notebook with notes and start applying the info to your "spot" and see what you can come up with. And keep your cardio up in between. Good luck

Randy Newberg's youtube series on e-scouting will give you everything you need to know about digital scouting. Elk Nut's podcasts are phenomenal for calling advice. And get in the best possible shape you can. You will have a lot more fun when you're not sucking wind all the time.

Better narrow it down. "Western" Montana is a big place. mtmuley
Sounds like I got alot of podcasts to be listening to. :) I was originally gonna go 240 into the Bitterroot valley but the more I've looked into it the more I'm discouraged.

I've hunted 240 a little, there's elk, and ask the private land in the valley is where they head. Some of that terrain is killer. I've hunted a few of the units around that Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor area as my buddy is from there. We get into elk but they know how it works and where the safety on private land is. Throw me a pm if interested.

Or pm me. I live here and have hunted it for almost 40 years. mtmuley

What discouraged you? mtmuley
I had been looking up the selway-bitterroot wilderness area and Dirk was (on the Idaho side) saying how it was really thick and the elk we're spread out. Not completely disregarding the unit just got alotta research to so
