Western Arrow Build

I plan on buying some new arrows for Western hunting. I will be hunting everything from whitetail to moose if I can manage to draw a tag, but for the majority just mule deer and elk.

I have been on the fence about the arrow weight I want to hurl downrange . longer shots can be the nature of western spot and stalk hunting. Many people use a lighter arrow for longer shots but I don't really see the reasoning behind it if you are running a slider sight. I am curious to hear what other people are shooting as far as brands, fletchings, weight, broadheads etc.

I am planning on purchasing a new bow very soon. The specs are fairly consistent between my options so they are as follows: fps=260-280 DW=70LBS. DL=28"

I was thinking about running an easton axis in 340 spine tipped with a 125gn. slick trick viper trick and blazer vanes.

You will be fine with that exact setup. I'm running a 340 axis with 100 grain waccem up front. Haven't killed a moose but wouldn't hesitate with my setup. Pass led through an elk last year and center punched a rib going in. I heard it break. Arrow still ended up 10 yards being him.

You will probably get some answers to go heavier and I wouldn't disagree. I'm just shooting this setup so dang good I don't want to change anything. I wouldn't go lighter than the setup you mentioned.

That's the bow I have been leaning towards but I haven't been able to shoot one yet. Is there anything you don't like about it or makes it stand out against other bows?

I shoot a 532gr GT Kinetic XT 200 with 2.1" Q2i Fusion Xii vanes and 125gr heads. I shoot it out to 100 all the time with my 7-pin sight. But I haven't taken a shot at an animal past 61 yards in 10 years. Mostly because I haven't needed to.

If I didn't have a 32 1/2" draw, my arrow would be quite a bit lighter. I try to keep my arrow speed in the 280-290 range. This setup is right at 289fps. It doesn't matter where or what I'm hunting, I'd still use the same arrow.

I like to use the longest inserts I can find and usually go with the 100 grain brass. I'm not 100% sold on foc so that is not the reason I do it. I use them because they give more leverage to the weakest point on the arrow and help them not to fail just behind the insert. It also doesn't hurt to foot over the joint with a couple inches of aluminum.

The biggest disadvantage is trying to snake an arrow between branches or openings. I've had a few shots over the last few years where I would have missed some branches if I was shooting with a flatter trajectory.

FWIW, I think the arrow you propose is fine.

Personally I like arrows a little heavier and stronger. In my compound, I shoot the Axis 300's with a 150 gr VPA 2 or 3 blade head- puts me close to 500gr, I think they are 490gr finished.

I go a bit heavier in my recurve as I need the weight for better arrow performance in a low energy setup.

Should work fine. I shoot FMJ 300's with a 125 grain VPA head and the regular HIT's. My arrows weigh 515 grains. I don't worry about the drop on longer shots. That is the function of a sight and rangefinder. I have a CBE slider and shoot out to 100 and have no issues with clearance.

Not to mention if you would couple your arrows with single bevel broad heads you'll have a killer setup for breaking through ribs (or maybe a shoulder if your shot didn't go so well). I'm also switching to a heavier arrow for next year and am planning on running single bevel broad heads with it for that reason.
