The scope rings started out eight years ago because I couldn’t find a set of rings for my new Tikka that I liked… seemed redundant to add a pic rail to a rail and then stack rings on top of that… to many potential points of failure.

Since I had mountains of 7075 aluminum from other products we build, pretty soon I was building them for all my rifles & my buddies.

Here’s a quick video of how the rings work on a Tikka & show the 17-4 screws and locking pins.

Thanks Justin, there are two 17-4 recoil pins that go into the factory provided holes on the top of the Tikka receiver. These pins, working in conjunction with the custom 17-4 shoulder screws, put the maximum amount of hardened steel in the shear area of the mounting system. Because this is a one piece mount, the four shoulder screws and two recoil pins all work in concert to provide maximum alignment and shear strength.

I put an animation of how the system works up on YouTube.

@Fred@Exterra was kind enough to give me a prototype mount made for a T1x. Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to get it mounted and test it yet. That said the mount itself is impressive, and the fit and finish is great. The integrated level is neat as well.

We could absolutely look at that… but to be honest, I absolutely loathe machining picatinny rails… I’d hate to think how many miles and miles of picatinny slots I’ve machined in my life…

On my rifles I want the fewest points of failure possible. Adding a rail & then a clamp on ring works (especially if you bond the rail to the action), but it offers a couple more points of failure and unnecessary weight.

The downside with the one piece, direct mount is that it makes it more difficult to move scopes from rifle to rifle & you sacrifice a bit of latitude on scope location front to back.

I was specifically thinking about scopes with relatively short mounting areas and short eye relief.

Edit - SRS makes a Tikka pic rail with a pin but I like the way you executed the pins better.

SRS makes some good stuff, I like their products. If you have a scope with short eye relief or funky tube geometry, I’d be happy to send out a mount once we get caught up for you try out. Our mount should save you a couple ounces compared to a lot of options out there.
