On today's episode of bored at work, my internal monologue and I were researching hot rod 22's.

Was pricing out a barrel for a 22-284 and saw that PBB offers the 22-277. Which honestly is the cartridge I want. But didn't think it'd be possible.

I know a few guys on here have tinkered with the cases.

I'd have to get dies made I'm guessing. Or atleast a seater. Probably could use a 277 bushing die then use a series of bushing to work the cases down to the Lords caliber.

Just kind of curious how load dev goes for cranking the pressure to its potential. Shove as much n565 in the case as possible (sarcasm)? Just don't want to go this route and find out it's actually not possible to get the full potential out of it. Can quick loads give a starting point?

In theory it should push an 88 at 3300 in an 18" or maybe faster. Which is crazy.

Be this or just wait for the 22 creed plus peak. But there's probably even more questions on reloading those cases.

It’s possible. You’ll need to aneal and neck turn. As well, with repeated loading gas leakage seems to be an issue with some, and you get chamber etching or ringing.

I guess it comes down to how much FAFO a guy wants to do...

22-284 seems like the easy button. Dies and reamers available. About 10 more grains capacity over the creed.

Can I actually shoot the difference between a 22 creed and a 22-284? Absolutely not! Would blowing money on another hot rod rifle be fun as hell? Fk yes!

I have launched 88 gr ELD M bullets out of my 20” 1-8 223 AR15 , loaded long , single feed 2.495” at 2,940 fps using shell tech NAS3 cases. It’s a single feed. My guess 82,000 psi no issues. The barely stabilized, as I knew ultimately it would need a faster twist.

But I’m think a 24” 1-7 twist and I could easily get 3,050 fps, So it sort of defeats the entire 22 vengeance or 22 Creedmoor idea until the have steel cased Creedmoor cases.

These Federal steel and NAS3 cases sort of change the playing field. On top of that while the NAS3 Shell Tech cases are technically not reloadable the federal +Peak cases are reloadable.

So now you’ll have 6.5 Creedmoors belching 130 gr bullets at 3,000 to 3,100 fps depending on barrel length, and 100 gr ELD VT’s at 3,350 gos.

I got 277 fury cases anf necked down for my 260 rem and up for my 308’s with the idea of loading 63,000 psi case pressures and not blowing out my primer pockets, it did work well, just keep reloading them. The primer pockets hold and out of a 22” AR10 platform I get 2,950 fps with the 130’s and 2,820 fos with the 140’s.

So not bad but +Peak case are going to just add 150 plus fps . The problem is I am in on the Sig Furry cases and they work fine for their intention. So I just may run with them for a while

The Furry cases give me 2,700 fps with 175 RDF’s out of my 20” AR10

22 creed plus peak sounds like the easy button.

Talking with Form yesterday and he's got a few other ideas to test out. Going to see how they play out.

Also have a 270 wby that needs a new barrel. Have the brass. Could neck those down to 22 cal...

Sounds like a good way to burn money and time with no real upside beyond enjoyment of tinkering.
Point blank range out to 400 or whatever it works out to be for thermal hunting seems like a worthy cause, even if the barrel life is 500 rounds.
