Hey Rokslide, welcome Elk Finder, an online interactive map to help you find elk--"stop guessing" as they say! Owner & designer, @Jon Olson is a long-time member and has designed a very unique product that will take your e-scouting to the next level.

Check it out at https://elkfinder.com/

You can purchase there, or if you're feeling lucky, give him a welcome on this thread and he'll draw for one Rokslider to take home 1-year complimentary access to Elk Finder.

Just chime in with your favorite way to hunt elk: rifle, bow, muzzleloader and he'll draw somewhere in the next few weeks.

Archery! Welcome to you and good luck with your journey! I would appreciate a review video of how it works if you have made one yet. @Jon Olson

Thank you! A walkthrough video is one of my top priorities right now, along with a sample map people can view/test before signing up. I know it’s hard to evaluate a mapping tool from screenshots alone, so I want to make it much easier to see what Elk Finder actually does, how the layers work, and how I personally use it when scouting.

In the meantime, I’m happy to answer any specific questions about the data, layers, or how it works.

I am happy to be here as a sponsor and here to answer any questions.

1. Elk Finder helps narrow big country into higher-probability areas based on habitat overlap: feed/moisture, bedding cover, slope, access/pressure, and fire/clearcut disturbance.
I'm working on adding aspect (North, Northeast).

2. Demo video + sample map are a top priority.

3. It is built from elk behavior first, not generic mapping features.
I'm not trying to replace the mapping tools we all use. I am trying to answer: "Where should I start looking?"

4. I built it because I had the same problem.
I drew an out-of-state New Mexico elk tag in 2020 and I know how it feels to start e-scouting months ahead of time, and place dozens of waypoints in onX in areas that "look good".

Elk Finder is meant to reduce wasted scouting time. Most of us balance coveted vacation days with family and hunting, and even taking one week off to hunt elk feels so little and we want to make the best use of our time in getting on elk as fast as possible.

5. Early access means user feedback matters.
This is exactly why I launched it here first. I want serious hunters to help shape what is useful and what can be improved. I am open to any feedback, criticism, and feature requests.

Very skeptical but also would be curious to look at units we've hunted successfully for years to see how accurate it actually is.

That skepticism is fair. I have done a lot of validation with friends and family who hunt Oregon and Idaho elk and I've been very pleased with the results, but that is difficult to prove.

If you want to compare Elk Finder against country you already know well, you could DM me a general area, an old waypoint, or spot you no longer hunt, and I can DM you a screenshot of the results.

Archery for bull and late rifle cow.

Like others have said, I’d be interested in “calibrating” the results to what I’ve seen in the field.
