Well, I can tell you this. i've shot close to 100 hogs at close range with a Ruger security six in .357 with 158gr hollow points. [30+ yrs ago]

I was shocked how many times one....two...three rounds wouldn't kill them. Well of course straight down on the backbone drops them....its the getting them to hold still part that was hard- grin. Multiple shots to the head and some of those pigs still on their feet-crazy.
I have come to believe that the hardcast or the penetrating rounds are a game changer. Now unfortunately I personally don't do that depredation anymore to test on a bunch of hogs.
I do think that if those bullets would not mushroom...like the penetrating rounds of today----they would be much more effective.
So to your question, I think .357 is good...if used with hardcast bullets. I wish i still had hundreds of hogs to verify.
I do know knives work well too /grin [me with Tass in the Alexander valley]
