I was wondering if anyone has switched from Howa or Weatherby Vanguard 7mm magnum long action to 300 PRC using the same reciever?

I know they make a 300 PRC now. My action is older. I took my barreled action out of my stock and measured the bottom inlet of my reciever. It's 3.5". I was reading on one of the threads that someone mentioned the bottom inlet of the reciever could be milled for a longer opening. If it isn't possible I will just rebarrel my action in either 7mag or 300 win mag. I have used it for mule deer to elk.

I have my rounds loaded at 3.640" COAL for my 300prc. A Smith might be able to open up the mag well.

If you are already comfortable with the 7RM might as well stick with that. Plenty of critters have fallen to the 7mm Remington Magnum..

Or if you truly want to change to something besides 7RM/300WM you could run 6.5prc, 6.5ss, 6.5sst, 7ss, 7sst, 300wsm, 300ss, 338ss. The SS/SST are "wildcat" cartridges by Rich Sherman. They have head stamped brass but can require fireforming. So of those choices I would lean towards the 6.5prc or 300wsm.

Thanks for the reply.... yeah if I can't get it milled I will probably stick with the 7RM.
