I saw a report recently that claimed there is still an "experimental" population of 6-10 red Wolves in the Smokies. I can't find the link again though.

Red wolves were released in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in October 1991. The program was terminated in 1998 because of low pup survivorship, disease, and lack of prey to support the red wolf population in this area.

Well after seeing this, maybe wolves aren't a large of a culprit as we thought. However, 61% of wolf diets are elk! We certainly don't need a bunch more of them running around!

I definitely think the lion quotas need to be increased to account for the lion population. I`m surprised California even has an elk population now with no lion hunting and reduced bear harvest in that state.

While bear and lion numbers may have inclined some since 1995 they were eating as many elk then as they are now the ONLY addition to the equation is the wolf. I am not suggesting that wolves are the only culprit in the declining elk populations in certain areas in the West, but the lions and bears have been here the whole time.

Hate to see things like that, Ross. Nature is a cruel beast and when we as hunters are competing for the same resources that these predators are, it makes it an even harder pill to swallow. The fact that wolf management is still controlled by politicians and tree hugging whackos in many areas and not a biological and logical approach just irks the hell out of me.
