I saw this at the Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh over the weekend. Newell farms had the wolves on display. I just cant believe these type people are still trying to push this idea. Turns out none of us hunters have any idea about the elk population. They are doing FINE!

The elk numbers are up at high fence elk farms where wolves can't get to them.

Agree! Hell, I couldn't find any supporting evidence to the "claim" I guess they just make shit up!

It looks like they cherry picked certain lines from each states annual reports. Idaho elk for example are "at or above management objectives"..."in 21 of 28 elk management zones". That is the rest of the sentence from the Idaho hunting regulations booklet last year. I guess if you cut out half of a sentence you can make it mean whatever you want.

So, are they pushing for full release of Red wolves back into their historic range in NC?

Of course they did. What is the status of the Yellowstone herd at ground 0? They should list the management objective in zones that have wolves and those that don't.

From the USFWS:

1994 yellowston elk pop (wolves introduced 1995) 19,045
2012 yellowstone eld pop 3,915

Wow, I think these people need to come with me into areas in N. Idaho where the elk are few and far between, when they should be significant numbers. The wolves seemed to be everywhere. When we would get a bugle response to our calls, within seconds the wolves would howl and be within a 1/4 mile of the elk just doggin them. The elk would just go quiet. I think they have had a profound effect on elk numbers and behavior. I am trying to do my part so check out my thread on trapping.

I love how elk populations are at objectives but wolf populations are at or above in most places but we don't need to hunt those. These people are complete wackos

They released red wolves in the smokies several years ago, like 10+ years. They all died. In fact, a good friend of mine is a game warden here in Tn and has told me everywhere they have released red wolves in the south have died except for areas where they are completely isolated, like barrier islands, etc... and they supposedly could not vaccinate them for whatever reason? If that's true, and they are suddenly doing well, what gives I wonder?

Where all have they been released?

Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrel, and Washington counties in NC. Reintroduction began in the late 80's. Couldn't tell you how many millions have been spent.
The introduction in Appalachia did not go as well from what I understand.

They aren't all dead. There are 100 or so red wolves in the Carolinas. My brother in law lives down there so I go camping a few times a year. I've never seen one but the Rangers always warn not to feed them.

Yes, Red Wolves are in a large area of Eastern NC right now. However, the state just approved daytime coyote hunting in the red wolf zones.

Just saw that my RW info was already posted. They also had a page about Yellowstone saying the elk "simply" moved out of the area and down to grasslands after the wolves were introduced.

I did find a survey online yesterday on the Greater Yellowstone area. It shows the elk population increasing this past year . Its now up to 4412 animals. They cited a decrease in wolf population as the result. Wolf population decreased by 40% due to diseases. The study went back 31 years but was fairly difficult to understand. It actually blamed hunting for a lot of decrease in the GY area at one point.

I saw a report recently that claimed there is still an "experimental" population of 6-10 red Wolves in the Smokies. I can't find the link again though.
