I don't like to argue. I like to learn. I think that's valuable.

No one would force anyone else to read or post in threads if they didn't want to.
While I agree with this for me its more the attention that they attract. If RS gets filled with political threads, people will find it that just want to argue, then they move out to the other threads and it becomes a shit show.

Its also extremely annoying when general discussion gets filled up with the same type of thread just a different twist. Hell there is three threads in there bitching about social media.

Civil discourse is pure Americana.

I think some political discourse is good as long as it's civil. The next couple of years are going to see a lot of attacks against 2A and it's good for us gun owners to discuss.

Just my $0.02

Thank you for your efforts. I posted in one the other day, against my better instincts, and immediately regretted it.

It's a challenge for me to remember that the world will go on whether or not I stick my opinion in.

The problem with allowing political discussions, even when they are in a separate section, is that the strife often finds its way into the main forum. People end up holding grudges and attacking people outside of the political DMZ.

This is a hunting forum. If you want political discourse, go to a political forum.

Thanks to the owners for making the choice to remove political bickering from one of the last politics-free zones that I can find.

I say just don’t allow them. The tundra forum I’m on hands out 30 day vacations for even a single political post.
Damn, that sounds great! I really could use 30 days in Hawaii right about now, and I just bought a Tundra for my son, so I’m thinking that maybe I should join that forum. The crappy thing is, I’m not really into politics. I think about 99.9% of politicians are scum bags, and the 0.1% that are good, died a long time ago.

I mentioned Archerytalk earlier and how it now sucks. They have the "Anything and Everything" section which is quite similar to the "General Discussion" section here. Go over to AT and check out that section now. It's supposed to be a place for discussions about all sorts of things. It has devolved to where 95% of the threads are political and they all end up in pissing matches. Civil discourse is one thing, but just about every political thread on a hunting forum eventually turns to crap.

This has been addressed multiple times in this thread. The problem with allowing them is that they spill into other threads and they attract people that just want to argue. Then you cant even have a thread about a bino harness without everyone arguing about what color is best.

Even the few political threads that have been on here in the last little while have changed the feel of the forum. I'm not American, I don't have a dog in the fight. But it was certainly interesting (sad?) to see the change in tone. I personally decreased my time spent here and will decrease it further if it becomes political.

I'm barely present on my local hunting forum as it's overly political. Guys are right that the bad blood from political threads flows over and is injected into even 6.5 Creedmoor for Elk? threads.

Thanks to Robby and the rest of Rokslide for keeping this place about hunting.

If everyone would just check their emotions at the door and present actual facts with logic and reason, they wouldn't be a problem at all........or I guess I should say "shouldn't" be a problem at all.

They're not very popular right now so at the first turn of bickering, we're deleting them. We allow them if they pertain to hunting, and are true, but please be respectful.

thanks!
Thank you! All those threads end up sounding the same. It's mostly the same 10 people representing the right and same 4 people representing the left. You just need to look at the username to know what the tone of the response will be. These same folks are excellent contributors in other threads. But, the political threads go down the same tired path.

The problem with political forums is they seem to mostly have degenerated into echo chambers where people go to hear their opinions repeated and amplified and the other side vilified. Not healthy.

obviously we want to avoid getting into hateful violent or threatening speech because then the owners of the hosting service or IP providers will shut you down. Oh yeah, also the hateful comments we are tempted to make are often directed aglainst our countrymen that we grew up with and live next door to.

I think it’s good to allow it and important to keep a lid on civility. One of the functions served is it allows a place for us to come together with people who may not agree with our opinions but to have something in common. It keeps the other side human And relatable. Healthy.

Discussion of differing opinions is healthy for a society.

Arguing and contention is not.

I am tired of the labels, stereotypes, and shaming.

Just want to go someplace and get away from it for awhile when needed...

apparently I applied too much logic.
This right here is the embodiment of what happens with political threads. We have a thread here, talking about political threads. The vast majority in here at not in support or limited support of the allowance of them on the forum. You come in here and post three sentences. Multiple people respond back with their stance on these. You respond with what you did, essentially calling all those that disagree with you illogical. This is on thread that has nothing to do with politics. Take this and add in the strongly held positions of religion and/or politics. What do they become? Shit shows.

There are many valid reasons for not allowing political threads, all of which have been stated in this thread. The fun part about it is, your logic can be used both ways. Dont like that political threads arent allowed...move on.

Rokslide should be a happy place to escape from the craziness. I challenge anyone to find a political thread that doesn't end up being downright nasty. If I make the mistake of looking at the news before coming on this site, I am tempted to lash out when I see posts along the lines of "Can I kill a Kodiak brown bear with a pellet gun?" or "One pair of underwear to do it all?".

If you’re using more than one pair of under wear you’re just silly. Wear front wards, then back wards, flip around, do it again, then commando while you wash it in the creek!

I want a pair that will perform in all four seasons and can double as a pot scrubber. It needs to not chafe my private parts, but needs to be abrasive enough to scrape burned food off the bottom of my jet boil.
