MURS is what you seek. GMRS is UHF. MURS is VHF. All else being equal you well get more range. I really like the Motorola RMM-2050, and I have used them pretty extensively. They are rugged and reliable. No license required.

Can you change antennas on MURS radios legally? I know you are not allowed to on FRS and must be licensed to use GMRS
