Spent a solid week burning leather in the Salt Range of W Wyoming during the rut. Had one VERY close call (Sub 5 yards) on a bull we called up from a river bottom. No shot opportunity. Saw other elk, heard others, action died second half of the trip.
Well, my wife suggested that we go back out again during rifle season (Yes, you heard that right). Only week available for my hunting partner and I is 11/1-11/8. This makes it an antlerless hunt in the units south and east of the tri-basin divide.
We are hoping for some snow (because it would be cool) and hopefully help us cut fresh tracks, spot animals, get them moving during the day, etc. These are new to me units and new to me elk hunting time of year. I am marking what looks like any good vantage point/glassing knob on Onx. Plan is to glass a lot of country in the morning and evening hours. Mid day may split time between glassing (if its not hot) and if it is, burning boot leather in the timber/benches/flat covered areas looking for fresh sign and hopefully animals. We will plan on being mobile with the truck and moving during the mid day hours if we are not seeing anything.
Any other advice or words on wisdom on our game plan would be much appreciated.
