How to hunt elk early season - New Mexico

I’m resurrecting my own thread.

Let’s say When e scouting and you have a bunch of large east west running drainages one after another that all looks somewhat the same with same features. Whats your strategy for sifting through them or shrinking them down? I’m sure they all have elk.

Run the ridges with a bugle tube.

I use the Terrain-X feature on On-X maps as well. It's a great resource to find potential bedding areas withing these drainages.

Find the three essentials, food, water, and bedding in as many locations as possible and spend a day or two touching on these triangles and not wasting too much time but act as if you are scouting.

Let the traffic tell you where to go, if there are 4 rigs hunting one drainage and the drainage two over has nobody, try there as the people will push the elk towards you. I would choose fewer callable elk with less people to an abundance of less callable elk with a lot of people.
