A buddy of mine went to Sportsmen's Warehouse and was checking out the gen 1 Razor spotting scopes. Apparently the guy behind the counter said that if you buy this model and send it in within 6 months for repairs, Vortex will send you the newest model. Have you guys heard of this? I'm not sure I'm buying this. Sounds like a guy just looking to make a sale.

I bet they would just replace it with a new model if it couldn't be fixed.....but that sounds kinda dishonest, doesn't it?

Yes, it does. I'm gonna go to the one here in town and ask them about it. If it's true, I'm buying one and getting that in writing.

I meant it's dishonest to buy an old version hoping vortex will upgrade you for free.

Not if it's damaged and needs repairing. Not sure where you got the impression of dishonesty.

I don't have a horse in the race, but:
1) If you buy a new scope from an authorized distributor, then go "break" the scope for a new model under warranty...that would be dishonest, and an act of a person without much character(but hey, "let's make America great again").
2) Don't be surprised to find out that after breaking said new scope, that Vortex's "bulletproof" warranty is bullshit,,,many have been very unhappy with their service on broken optics(yes they fix broken eye cups & lost lens caps).
3) The Razor isn't that good of a scope, and many other models costing less are better quality.

Which spotters are better for the money than the Razors?

Again, who ever said anything about dishonesty? You seem to assume I'm a person who possesses that trait...

I am very happy with my Razor HD spotting scope. I just recently sent it in after it took a fall. They fixed the focus knob and replaced the reticle eyepiece. This was the second time I had to send it in, both my own fault.

Vortex quality, both product and customer service, is top notch.

But to address the OP, no, you don't get a new scope. Besides, the Gen 1's are better in my opinion, only because they are more compact.

I agree. but if someone is buying with the intent of taking advantage of a businesses fantastic customer service, it would be dishonest IMO.

Not saying that was your intent. But it sounds like the salesmen's intent.

I've heard it's different glass and has slightly better resolution. Not sure if it's a huge difference.

Sorry, but no...not even close, not even in the top 15...just the facts.

Sounds like an opinion to me

I've had use it a few times. Always taken care of quickly. And I would have to disagree with the Razor comment as well. Good Value for the money.

Wow. Someone's salty.

Not at all Sir, but Vortex spotters & scopes aren't "top notch", their best modles barely makes mid-grade level according to testing. They are getting passed by smaller & better makers like Sightron/Opticron/Celestron as we speak...for less money. Look at any quality testing of binos rating all aspects of optic performance, and see just how far down the list they are...Vanguard blows them out of the water.

Their service dept. has to be as big as the mfg. plant, because they going to need it...just Google Vortex service, 10,000's of guys raving about their broken gear getting fixed lol...right, most good optics rarely fail other than a major fall or blunder. Vortex is a small piece of the optic worlds sales, yet commands the most attention on service...think about it, and think about how many new ones are in the sales boards every day...wonder why ???, because they're upgrading ;) It not meant as a bash, just stating the truth...just like they aren't made in the USA.

Just because you buy a Chevy and pimp it out, don't make it a Cadillac...cuz it ain't.
