Vortex optics experience

It seems as though a few years ago I was a glutton for punishment. Every single scope I owned of theirs went down and was general poor quality.

I currently own a Viper PST Gen 2 that hasn’t gone down yet, but it’s on a very light use rifle.

My UHD binos have been pretty solid.

I had a Razor LHT 4.5-22 but travel was limited and I never really had full confidence in it so I sold it.

Overall, would not recommend.

Vortex makes some really good cheap optics in that they are readily available with easy warranty/service. They are a great company to buy your kids cheap binoculars from. They are not Alpha glass or suitable for serious use.

Overall I think the value proposition of the mid to higher end Vortex stuff has really gone away as their prices have gone up around 40% in the last few years while other companies have entered the market at lower price points with similar rebranded Chinese/Philippine/Japan scopes. A decade ago Vortex was pushing the entire industry forward on budget to mid level scopes.

I think the upper end of Vortex makes no sense. No way am I paying $3k for a Razor Gen 3 when I can buy an ATACR for the same money.

For what it’s worth I’ve had 2 Viper Gen 1 scopes, a Razor LH (their best product that they discontinued), a Razor Spotter, a Range 1000 and their kids binoculars without much fuss. They survived moderate use and only the rangefinder needed to go back to them. That said I have sold most of those optics and largely moved on. I can afford better optics and I hate their marketing machine.

I’ve had a couple

10x42 Viper HD’s that were Ok.

Diamondback 20x60 spotting scope that wasn’t worth the money.

Viper HS 2.5x10 scope that has been on 2 different magnum caliber rifles. It’s been on several hunts and has worked flawlessly.

Razor UHD 10x42 binos. I was lucky enough to win these. I’ve compared the glass to Swaro SLC and Leica Geovid and think they’re equal of both. Maybe better than the SLC’s. I’m sure the Pures are better, but unless I win the lottery they’re not better enough to pay the money.

I’ve used Vortex spotting scopes for over a decade at this point. My experience echoes most the other people I know who have or had any Vortex optics. Their warranty is great but plan on using it. I probably wouldn’t use any scopes but find this an acceptable facet of using the spotting scopes.

Lot of good shared experiences in here. With that in mind, what other companies would you guys recommend. One of the things I do like about vortex is that on paper, they have a ton of different options and I generally like their reticles. There are a lot of other companies that I’ve seen recommend, but when I go to look at them, it seems like they either have limited/outdated reticle options or are otherwise lacking in other features. Leupold has a lot of outdated reticles. I don’t think I’ll have money for Schmidt and bender or any of those top tier optics for a very long time.

Also, who among them have hassle free warranties: trijicon for example has a good warranty, but my experience has been that it is not exactly hassle free and if you’re not the original owner, you’re not covered at all.

I own or have owned 3 scopes (crossfire2, viper pst g2, razor hd g2), plus 4 optics (diamondback HD binos, fury hd rf binos, and their higher end rangefinder, and a razor hd g2 85mm spotter).
I still own a set of their cheap binos, the fury’s, a viper pst g2 scope and the spotter. The binos, invluding the rf binos, have been used significantly and have never failed. The scope is on a .22lr and needs to be re-zeroed almost every use (ie fail). Otoh the razor HD scope was the first scope I had that DIDNT have a wandering zero…it was a longer-term loan and I had to return it after a year. Not really being a “long range hunter” I dont consider a rangefinder a critical piece of gear. My cheap binos are nothing special, but theyre cheap and easy to throw in the truck, checked baggage, etc without fear of breaking an expensive set. My spotter is “fine” but I only use it to see little holes on paper, its not fantastic optically but it does what I need, and it was a gift.
My opinion based on what I own and what I have seen in friends gear, is that I would never choose any vortex product for a “must function” application (ie life-safety or a hunt I saved points for years to draw where failure could shut down the hunt, etc). But for non-critical applications such as a range toy/plinking gun, I will continue to buy their stuff where it hits the value sweet-spot. Probably wont buy another scope though.

I wish Vortex would come out with a high end Razor UHD 8x25 bino and Razor UHD level spotter.
Love their Razor LPVO's and scopes.

I’m a big vortex fan, don’t have a lot currently but have and it was all great for the most part. I have a HST scope that i had on a 280AI for 10 years and never had a single issue. Swapped it to a different 280AI not and it’s still great, the only reason I switched was because I wanted a FFP. I have a half dozen pairs of viper binos for my work crews and they are great. I’ve also had a viper spotter, razor spotter and razor binos that were good. The viper needed warranty work and they sent a brand new spotter. I sent the Razors to be cleaned up and they sent new ones. Decided to sell both the new optics and buy some new NL’s just because. I would have been fine keeping the Razors as they were good glass and found me lots of game with no issues.

I have only had the diamondback binos and 1 rangefinder. Everything had needed some work at some point or needed replaced. I will not buy a vortex scope and will probably switch to a different company for a range finder in the future. However, I have heard a lot of good things about Razor UHD line of binos and that they are not far from alpha level glass of the top brands. I plan to get some UHD binos in the future as they are great glass but not near the price point of alpha glass

I'm on my third Vortex rangefinder (warranty replacement of a warranty replacement of a non working Ranger 1800) and it has issues and might be sent back for a 4th replacement. But I have a cheap crossfire on a .22LR that gets abused regularly and maintains zero perfectly. With vortex you win some and you lose some.

Had 2 Leupy's and a Sig go down, none of them were replaced under warranty. Be glad you've got the Vortex.

Ouch... yeah, like most have said the warranty process is easy and quick. Shouldn't have to use it 4 times for the same product, but hey, I'm glad it's there.
Vortex gets the Nordstrom / Costco customer service & warranty award.
They are 1st class from their low end to their high end with good turn around times.
AAAAAAA++++++++.
SIG recently changed their warranty from 5years to lifetime.

Vortex gets the POS / never buy again award from me after many quick scope failures.
I don't care how fast it's replaced WHEN it breaks.

Back before I knew I had to have NL Pures or RF binos to be a hunter I spotted the bull in my avatar with some Vortex Diamondback 10x42's. Still have that pair and use them as loaners. I also have a 13-39x56 Razor spotter that I really like and coupled with an Ollin digiscoping setup have gotten some really nice footage and pics.

That said, I swore off the scopes long ago. I have an itch to try a Razor G3 on a PRS setup but other than that I stay away.

Bought 4 Vortex at the same time years ago due to great word of mouth reviews.
All 4 broke. Replacements broke.
2nd round of Replacements found new homes with Replacement disclosure
I've never owned a Vortex rifle scope. The Razor, UHD, and Fury AB's have done their job exceedingly well. The Razor Gen1 spotter is very good as well. Then again, I've killed hundreds of animals with Leupy, Arken, Athlon, and Meopta scopes that never hold zero.........
