Just went through my account with T-Mobile and realized you need to TURN ON emergency satellite messages. The actually testing is another monthly fee.

I believe its $10/month if you dont have their top tier plan

For those not with tmobile, FYI, you can go to a tmobile store and sign up for this $10/month satellite messaging plan (I had ATT). They will give you a phone number and physical or virtual SIM.

When you leave cell service, your phone will be able to send and receive texts on that phone number.

Pro tip: when I signed up for this, it also gave me FREE UNLIMITED 5G data. I honestly think its a bug and not intentional, but it was great because my ATT plan only had 4 gigs of data.

Ive since switched to tmobile, as I was happy with the coverage and the price was right. Their satellite texting (and possible accidental data trial..) earned a customer, I guess.
