Fellas, I'm strongly considering going on an archery elk hunt in Utah this year and was wondering who has hunted the public OTC bull tag areas. What units did you hunt/recommend? I like to pack my entire camp on my back and hunt where people don't often venture to. I live in Northern Arizona, so travel isn't an issue.

I havent hunted there yet. Im looking to do the same thing as you. Spoke with biologist out of Price, UT. Recommendation is Unitahs as the other place Im considering has a lot of private land nine mile.

I've hunted both areas. Nine mile is very difficult to access the public and most private is leased to outfitters be prepared for drama and have an accurate up to date GPS map chip. The unitias are the most popular any bull unit in the state tons of access plenty of atv tails, plenty forest service maintained trails and plenty of elk. You can still get away from others though. Reminder our season is fairly early and those elk stay fairly quite.

I've hunted the unitas for several years.
Has pretty much everything from over crowded four wheeler roads to wildness areas.
I've gone in with horses and had elk all around and then return to the same spot next year with very few elk and a couple other groups of people.
The hunt is early and sitting water is an option but its not like AZ as there is pretty much water everywhere up there.
If you could devote a couple weeks to the hunt and stay mobile. Even returning to the truck and hitting another drainage you should see elk.
There are also mountain goats and big horns up high. Always cool to see those.
Most of the high mountain lakes are stocked with trout.
Plus its an OTC tag so don't have to worry about the draw.
Hope that helped some.

Which method of hunting do you do? Do you hike in and set up a base camp?

I've done a nice car camp to hiking in several miles solo.
My favorite is getting back into the wilderness. My trips have kindof evolves from being pretty mobile the first years to now knowing where some elk are likely going to be and setting up more of a basecamp.

I live a few miles from the Uinta's and have grown up hunting them. If you like to hike in try to come after Labor Day as there are many people that like to hike. The season is early and the elk are spread out. The last few days of the hunt the Bulls will be bugling better in the backcountry. There are generally more elk up in the higher elevations. I have a wallow I hunt that is at 10500 feet. Any of the trailheads up around bald mountain will get you into elk.
