I'm a non resident of UT and have been just putting in for 'points only' every year.

Would I lose all of my preference points if I just wanted a general-season archery buck deer permit?

The points are separate for limited entry and general deer. I have limited entry points and general deer points.

I have 7 points for "Buck Deer" I'm not sure if they are for limited entry or general deer. How can I find out?

I'm assuming 'general deer' archery tags are not sold OTC for UT

Depends on the units I believe. If you've been putting in for limited entry points then you'll be fine getting a general tag. You shouldn't lose your "points" toward a limited entry unit. All tags you must draw, but there are generally OTC tags available after the draw for units that are undersubscribed. They seem to sell out pretty fast though.

Utah Limited entry deer points are bonus points and "general season" deer points are preference points. They are two different draws. You will have to look and see if the points are listed as bonus or preference. If you draw any of the general units, you will lose your preference points. There are always a few left over archery tags for the Northern units, but not always that many and they go fast when they go on sale in the summer.

If your points say Buck Deer, they're LE points. You are probably a few years fr4om getting an LE tag. You could probably get an archery tag in a unit like the Cache on a draw with no preference points. There are some good bucks on that unit, they aren't easy to get to though. A plus to having tha archery tag is you can hunt the Wasatch Front after the regular season is over and into the rut.

Yep, you can join the circus on the front lol. Just do your research because some of the units have a lot of private land. Lots of guys buy the leftover tags simply to hunt the Front. It's a far from perfect system, that's for sure. I think they take tags from guys who would hunt those units in the general season, when they have no intention of going out til the rut fires up on the Front.

I agree. I think all of the leftover tags go straight to the front hunt late in the year. It's crazy the last few years. Still a good hunt to keep hunting late in the year though. Kinda a love/hate thing.
