Last weekend I yet again froze my fingers trying this use my phone for navigation and to look at satellite images. So, I went I did a bit of searching for touch screen compatible gloves. I pick up some Etip Northface gloves. They have special material in the finger tips that are designed to let you use a touch screen without removing the gloves. Northface makes quite a few versions so I ordered about 8 different pair, and from those I selected the Gripper (thin), Apex (mid weight, soft shell) and the Montana (warmer glove). I also liked the plain Etip (liner Glover), the Apex+ (just a tad thicker than the regular Apex).
I have not used them in the field yet, just around the house, but I was very impressed with how well they worked. I’d say the thin and mid gloves work very well (I can do most functions like open an app, hit a button and do a two finger zoom). The thick gloves work ok (I can open the phone and select an app, and hit buttons, but it’s hard to zoom with two fingers). I did NOT think the warm gloves that were made of leather, as opposed to fabric like the Montana, worked very well. They were just too bulky.
I don’t think these gloves will mean I’ll never need to take off my gloves to use my phone, but I hope it will be much more rare. Overall, I think the prices are pretty reasonable as well.
