If you are near SLC used gear shops are everywhere. You can pickup up some old rentals for $99, but you will still need boots and poles. Lone Pine Gear exchange is one of my favorites and they do have a website.

If you have to fly to get there I wouldn't even consider buying skis & poles. Way too much hassle & cost & potential to get lost/ damaged. I also like having the ability to demo different ones each day depending on conditions & how adventurous I'm feeling. As stated above put a priority on getting your own boots.

Local place rents skis for $35 a day.
