I know this has been discussed in the past, but maybe there are newer opinions out there. I’ve owned a lot of lightweight gore rain shells, and early kuiu stuff. I’m now looking at the M5 from Stone Glacier. I am moving on from the dew point now, I’ve lost some weight and my dew point stuff is too big. So, I need new stuff anyways. I like that the M5 looks more durable than the thinner crinkly type shells, am I seeing that wrong? Reading through posts here, the M5 gets mixed reviews, specifically leaking and wetting out. To sum it up, is the M5 set worth moving to?

The m5 is definitely not the ultralight back country set, but if you know you’re getting weather then it’s well worth it in my opinion. I’ve used my m5 a bunch in some gross weather and I think it hangs with, or out performs all the other big name rain jackets. The fit is much better in my opinion and they run truer to size, I’m 5’11 190lbs with an athletic build and the large fits fine, I could get away with an xl but a large has been fine, whereas my buddys kuiu stuff has to be an xl or I can’t even get it on. And I like the high pockets so that my hip belt doesnt cinch on my pockets if I’m on the move with it on.

Thank you. As much as I like the idea of ultralight, I think I’d rather sacrifice a little weight for durability. Also, thanks for insights on the fit. I hate having to return stuff.

I’m in the same boat, a little extra weight is worth staying dry in my opinion. Yessir it sucks exchanging sizes, I just so happen to be right in the middle of large and xlarge so I’m no stranger to the rain on that haha. If I ordered a new one right now, I would probably get an xl just because a baggier rain jacket is fine for me, and it would be a hair more comfortable when layering jackets, if it’s really cold and wet out. I’ve ran puffys underneath my m5 when it’s brutally cold and windy or cold and wet and haven’t had a problem with sizing, but that’s where an xl would come in handy, it wouldn’t compress the loft as much and it wouldn’t be as restrictive.

That is great insight. I’m between a large and XL too. The extra room in order to not compress loft is a great point. Thanks, that all helps a lot.
