Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade my insulation layer for an upcoming late-season hunt and am considering the MTN OPS Peak 800 Down Jacket. I like the $240 price point and the athletic cut, but I wanted to check if anyone here has real-world experience with its durability and warmth.
It has 3oz of 800-fill goose down and a 20D stretch nylon shell. My concern is whether 3oz of down fill weight is enough to keep me warm while glassing in the wind, or if the stretch fabric sacrifices too much weather resistance.
I'll be using this as a static insulation piece over a grid fleece during active solo backpack hunting.
If you've used it, how does it hold up? If you think there are better options in the sub-$300 range—like the Kuiu SuperDown, Stone Glacier Grumman I’d love to hear your suggestions. Thanks!

Are you using it early season or later in the year? Early season I would think 3oz of fill would be alright but later season I’d look to something with more fill. The outdoor vitals puffy has over 5oz of fill and is in that sub 300 dollar range

I have never worn a piece of down while actively hunting. Ever. I have hunted down to -10 with just merino base layers, fleece and an outer shell like Kuiu Guide. Id imagine actively hunting with a down layer would be way to hot, but maybe I am different.

Ive used Eddie Bauer Cirrus down jackets, 650 fill for over 9 years now. Ive sat into the single digits with proper layering and stayed warm and comfortable.

Note, the quality of EB down jackets has taken a turn for the worst and I wouldn't recomend them. Decathlon jackets are phenomenal quality if you are on a budget. Just know to order a size up. Large fits like medium and ao on.

I am looking at using it for early season archery and a mid/late season rifle along with using it for waterfowl season. I will look into the outdoor vital one thanks for the info. Have you had any experience with the outdoor vital?

I consider a down jacket as one of my safety items. I'd spend the extra $50-100 and get "the best." It'll be lighter and more pack-able so it's easier to always bring, probably warmer also.
