Unit 53 New Mexico solo. Bad idea?

20+ days in New Mexico. I saved all my vacation for this. I like to fly fish too

I can't tell you how jealous I am! I have a friend who lives in NM who is fun as heck to hunt with, so everytime we draw a tag we get to hang with him AND elk hunt. Double positive! Enjoy your time there!

Have a fun hunt. Unfortunately something happened in that unit and elk disappeared. I grew up hunting it and was very successful every year. Last few times I’ve been in there it’s near impossible to find elk. Look at the success rates the last few years. Last year 14% success on all combined elk hunts (this includes cows), bow was less than 5%. Not trying to discourage anyone, just letting you know what you’re up against.

It’s going to be tough it sounds like. Not hearing very many favorable opinions

Never hunted it myself, but a guy at the archery club has guided up there. Killed some toads over the years!

Not sure how recent but there will be elk to get after somewhere up there!
