Hey all,

I had some luck and drew a unit 40 California Bighorn sheep tag in Idaho.
Hired a guide and have been doing as much research as I can and communicating with the biologists in the unit. Hoping someone on here has had the tag or been in the unit I’d love to just hear about your experience or see pictures or rams from 40

It was the only mature ram we saw. Super lucky to find him after some hard days hunting. Poaching is hurting that population bad

If you look at the base of his horn you’ll what we believe was a bullet hole that healed over but still was a burden for the sheep for sure.

Congrats! Great Cali! Nerve wracking I'm sure not turning up a selection of mature rams to sort thru.

I have heard 40 was having some troubles but I haven't heard poaching as a reason. A quick Google just shows the "one over the bag limit" couple from few years ago. Info?

I grew up in that country and when I checked the F&G website recently I saw the size of ram that was harvested there so I just had to see it. It's a dandy and unique. Congratulations!
I didn't know they had problems with sheep being poached out there. The area where I live we see lots of rams migrate through early spring but that's on and around private cattle ranches.
