Im not an engineer...but I see the patterns in failures of what engineers design every day.
Most people have absolutely no idea the nonsense going on in modern transmissions.
Engineering has run amuck on most of them in my opinion.
I mean, we are to weak, dumb, lazy, entitled to pull a lever or turn a key(the design of which rarely failed)anymore so we gotta push a button or turn a little knob to start a vehicle or put it in gear now.
The biggest pattern failure across the board ive noticed with modern transmissions has been torque converter clutch chatter and failure since they've moved to all these synthetic low viscosity fluids and running them hotter..By across the board I mean damn near every manufacturer. There used to be a handful of transmissions that it was common with, now its a rarity to a model Ive not seen that issue on.
Best advice I can give is keep fresh, oem fluid in them. Change it every 30-50k. The only truth to "lifetime" transmission fluid is that the lifetime of your transmission will be significantly shorter if you DONT change the fluid regularly

I don’t understand the cost cutting nature of these decisions. Anyone willing to buy a $75k+ truck would gladly pay another $1500 for something that would make their transmission more reliable!

Thanks! I also learned that it is about $3,000 to get a transmission shipped to and from the lower 48 from Alaska.

I have a built Silverado 1500 with a standalone trans cooler and would not recommend if you daily in cold weather. It struggles to get up to temp and shifts kinda hard until you get it warmed up. Not a problem with my all oem one even though it gets up to 225 in the summer.

Can’t find any published max operating temperatures for Toyota ATF WS. If you’re super curious and want to do a little redneck engineering. Take some fluid and a a high quality thermometer and hold some fluid at 225F for 15 min and see if anything boils off, color changes, physical changes, etc. Then try 240-260F (which are regularly listed as temps that over temp lights are triggered and see what happens. That’s about the best you can do short of finding some leaked internal engineering memos. You could get more technical with it and follow some of the ASTM spec testing procedures if you really wanted to go down a rabbit hole.
