I have a .375 Raptor 8...I'm interested in a shorter/lighter can for backcountry.

I was contemplating getting a Raptor 4 in .223 and using it on my 6XC (and soon to have 6UM) as well as .223/22CM.

I'm guessing that the UM can will end up slightly quieter than the Raptor 6 and definitely quieter than the Raptor 4.

I'm thinking I'll sit on my hands for a bit longer and go with the UM can.

Form said a while back that a raptor 6 with a reflex would be quieter by quite a few decibels than the um suppressor, although I don't know if he was just talking about the version they did testing on so far or if he was referring to the end product.

I was thinking the 556 version of a raptor 4 or 6 with a 4-in reflex would be pretty quiet on a 6 mm cartridge. If you look at the wolf Hunter testing results in the summit on the 556, it's likely just as quiet or quieter than the nomad tie XC on 556. The muzzle value is better, and the shooter's ear is just a little higher, but if you look at the graphs it's very likely because there's more back pressure causing a louder port pop on that particular gun.

Since the um can is 3D printed, I'm kind of hoping they offer 556 or 6 mm bore version right off the bat so that it's optimized for a smaller bore rather than 30 cal.

Because they've explained multiple times they're going for tone, not just suppression.

I just got in a raptor 6 in 22 bore with a 4" reflex couple days ago, havent shot it yet but planned to try it on my 22cm. Looks like their 22 bore will definitely fit 6mm pills through it, didn't put calipers on it and doubt they recommend it over a 6.5 bore but it seems to have plenty of room so I'll probably try this out on my 6mm PRC for science

The AB Raptor is a great can and, I think it is hard to beat for dB and tone. It sounds like the UMS can is supposed to be shorter and lighter. If I remember correctly, my Raptor 8 stack with a 3” reflex is about 10 oz. Seems like that is about the target weight that UMS is shooting for. It may be shorter than the Raptor, but it likely won’t be quieter or lighter. Maybe the other benefit for some will be that the UMS can won’t have the sex toy ribs on it that the Raptor has. Dunno. I will likely wait and see how the new can performs before putting down my coin. What they are suggesting is interesting, though.

First off, you don’t necessarily have to answer this. It’s intended to be food for thought on the suppressor design.

The reflex on the AB can I have is a simple expansion chamber. Given that you are 3-d printing this new can, have you considered adding any structure inside the reflex to direct and therefore slow down the gasses? Seems to me that AB has shown that baffles are more efficient at reducing muzzle blast and noise than their reflexes. Makes me wonder if small “pseudo-baffles” or spirals in the reflex could be used to slow down gasses moving out of the reflex and through the baffles.

I think it’s more the raptor 8 is 6.5” in front of the barrel. They are shooting for 4” in front of the barrel. So no way they can compete if just comparing dB reduction.

I agree, don't see how they can. Only adding 6.5" to the barrel length is a huge positive IMO, given modern day short suppressors and K-cans add about the same. All the while you are getting the outstanding suppression and tone of the AB8 which is far superior to short cans.

@Formidilosus do you have any first hand experience with the old GAP Jager OTB cans? I think they've gone to a flush mount, and my assumption is that they are kind of like a TBAC U5 "barely a suppressor" but the old ones always interested me.

Very little. Heard it being used once or twice. The only thing that stood out to me was it being louder than I would want.

That's what I figured, also the barrel length and firing schedule restrictions bring the appeal down quite a bit.

I missed this when you posted it:


I stated a Raptor 8 with 4” reflex would be lower dB. Not having used a Raptor 6, my guess is that it with a 4” reflex- so 5.5” in front and 4” reflex= 9.5” OAL, and at 1.625” diameter; it will be about the same as the UM, or maybe a touch lower dB… as it should be.

This isn’t magic, a can that is wider and longer should have a lower dB. UM isn’t trying to “beat” any other can- there is a list of requirements, and the can is being made to meet those. Those requirements aren’t currently being met by any can that’s available in the US.

Sure. Well why don’t they make a can that’s 10” long in front of the muzzle with a 5” reflex, and 2” in diameter- then it will be super quiet.

Or could it be that you build things to a list of requirements, and not try to “beat” something else that doesn’t fit those requirements?

I fully expect My ddc lti will be much quieter, but the idea of this for tree stand and woods hunting overall length reduction is still quite exciting

I and most others I am around, do not care for the DD STi. It’s just ok, with an annoying “ting” to it. The LTi however- that sounds good. The UM can won’t be lower dB than the LTi, but it can’t be as they aren’t in the same class.

As you stated for that use- there is more to suppressors in actual use than just total dB reduction. As an all around hunting can that is apart of the rifle and not just an add on hanging off the end of the barrel, even where the OTB can is now- I am enjoying using them a lot. So much so, that I don’t give any thoughts to the suppressor on the guns using them anymore.
