The over the barrel section (reflex) is a sealed expansion chamber. The gases enter in front of the muzzle expand back into the reflex, then go through the baffles to the muzzle and out the front. They are planning a 5/8x24 direct thread with adapters that will fit under the reflex for smaller threads. This is basically the same set up as an AB Raptor except the suppressor and the reflex are all one piece, where as the reflex on the Raptor can be removed and replaced with an end cap. I originally bought the Raptor because it would give me the performance of a bigger can with shorter overall length and had the flexibility to use with the reflex for extra suppression or without it for less weight. Frankly, I almost never use it without the reflex. What they are planning here would be like running a shorter suppressor with a larger reflex that is lighter. I think it’ll be a pretty great hunting can.
Agree with all. If you have the barrel to do it, I can’t think of any downside to running a reflex can

Now wanting to wade thru 15 pages, can you explain how the reflex supressor mounts and works?

Does it seal off at the rear? Is there a machined insert to match the barrel diameter in the rear? Do the gasses escape rearward?

I understand the female threads are countersunk 4” in but want to make sure it will fit something other that a fat carbon wrapped barrel.
Actually the first release won't fit over a carbon barrel diameter, those larger diameters cans for target/carbon barrel profiles will come at a later date. They want to focus on mounting it to actual hunting rifle which typically means smaller diameter barrels.

It'll direct thread with standard 5/8 threads

8” oal- 4” and 4”.

That rifle has a 16” barrel

are we talking 4" from the muzzle or 4" from the end of the threads? (3.5" from the muzzle with the reflex 4.5" from the muzzle, or 4 and 4 from the muzzle)

Trying to decide if I SBR my howa mini and use it with a raptor 8 (OAL barrel 16.3") or keep it at 16" with the UM supressor (OAL barrel ~20") Guess I am paying for a tax stamp either way

Barrel Chop Probably saves me 4", 5oz and 900$, but then I don't get a shiny new supressor.

On the prototype it was from the end of threads not tip of barrel.

16.25" or longer howa mini shouldn't be a SBR no? Or you going shorter than that? I'd not want to deal with the SBR stamp, traveling across state lines, getting permission to do so wirh SBR. Just keep the muzzle at 16", and add can. Idk if you drop it into an elf owl chassis it could now be classified as a pistol? And get away with a legal shorter barrel under 16".

it's currently 16.25. Thinking of having it cut to about 10" in a stockies stock. The barrel would be pretty much flush with the end of the fore end so the only thing past the fore end would be the supressor. I actually have 2 Mini actions, so I would probably keep one at 16.25 and SBR the other.

Awesome explanation. Thank you.

I believe Form said they would produce versions for sporter barrels and a Sendero. Honestly, I cannot see the point of putting a Sendero on a hunting rifle, carbon or otherwise. Additionally a reflex set up for a bull barrel will have less volume and be less effective unless they made the OD larger. That will also make the can heavier.

Good post, even though its plainly stated ultimate db reduction isnt the main design objective of this UM can. I would like to think/hope a 3d printed can could have a more complex baffle design that should allow it to easily outperform the raptor 4 stack(its an obnoxiously loud one in my experience). We may not be able to percieve it at our ear as twice as loud, but 3db is a big difference and would definitely sound louder between suppressors side by side. I think OSHA says the allowable exposure time goes down by half per 3db increase but I may be off on that

Another bonus to having the reflex be integrated instead of being removable, is possible increased concentricity and perhaps a tad less weight depending on wall thickness i guess

I have personally witnessed deer that did not react to an unsuppressed shot at close range from my .270, seeing another deer in very close proximity being killed/dropped, and the loud sound of my bolt chambering another round...it has allowed me to double up on deer on more than one occasion. It's strange how sometimes they react and sometimes they don't. I would assume that the frequency with which they do react is significantly decreased by the use of a suppressor.

My guess is terrain features and general alertness impacts this and is hard to quantify. In a canyon vs open prairie as an example. A heavily hunted herd vs low pressure deer as another.

I shoot suppressed for my own ears & general shooting pleasure with the added benefit of less noise for shots on game.

4.5db is a lot.
Yes , in the context of the dB scale. That is with the 3" reflex though. I'd like to see what a 5" does with that can. And as noted above, the UM can is geared more towards tone instead of dB and their goal is sub 140dB for 4" in front and behind muzzle
