Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

I've had no issues and I'm sizing brass to the same specs. I have had the best accuracy and results with LC. I've tried a ton of brass variations as I have a semi/public range available and TONS of .223 laying around all over the place. Definitely call Elijah and talk through what you've experienced. He seems like a great guy and he's always answered the phone himself when I call the listed number. BTW - LC brass, CCI primers and 23.6 grams of H335 seem to be the ticket for 90 grain ELD-X from a 16" barrel McGowen if that helps at all... Still checking daily for Sierra to release the 95 gr. TMK to see what I can do with that, as I am sure a healthy handful of other folks.. Good shoot'n

Thanks. I'll see what he thinks. And I just picked up some H335 and 90 gr ELD-X so that's perfect

What velocity are you seeing with the 90gr eldx?

Hell yeah, you guys are building some cool shit. What are the details on your stock?

Oh, and nice sandals, btw...😅

Also I ended up at the point where I had enough spare parts to put together another ULUL (4 lbs 4 oz with mag, sling, and optic). It is basically the exact same rifle I built the first time around, which is cool because I can do a direct comparison to however my new rifle is configured.

Changed out the six 10-24 screws on my handguard for titanium. Saved a whole 0.1 oz. Really at the point of diminishing returns lol.
Well, in this realm, ounces make pounds, and grams make ounces 😅

But I know what you mean, at some point you get to "okay, that's lightweight enough"...or at least I do. At that point it's just trying to figure out what might be slightly better...still waiting on a 6x45 barrel to answer that question.

We gotta get that 6x45 barrel deal rolling again. According to GRT, stretched to 2.4", it should be close to 2700 with the 87, or 2550 with the 95 TMK, at 16" - that would do for anything I'll ever hunt! (What with 223 being illegal in dumb states like mine...)

My current load in 16” 6x45 is about 2650 with the 87 gr. I’m sure I could push it more. I would also really like another 6x45 barrel.

I’m at 2.360” and +2600fps with the tmk and h335 in a 16”. I’m waiting for more to come in stock to play with. I’d also like a second 6x45 barrel.

So I've been reading though this tread for a long while now and was really inspired to build one of these no gas rigs just because but.... BCA recently dropped a bolt action upper deal. 180 for just the builders set that's the bolt and upper. Got one of the comple uppers I've been playing with in a "normal "deal...but have been considering building a ultra light deal for giggels.

Anyone use one of these yet for a ultralight?

Kind of surprisingly, I don't think anyone has. I think @Trackselk was messing with one, but I think he moved on from it.

I have a couple I need to work with and will test it out with my LW 30HRT barrel and imagine it will work well, but I think the general consensus would be that unless you're specifically building something based on a 6.8 SPC or Grendel/7.62 x 39 case, the Solo seems to be the preferred route.

Yeah, too heavy for me. I need to get mine listed for sale...

Over on AR15.com, there is a pretty long thread about the BCA upper. General consensus is that the bolt is really too easy to knock out of battery and that it would be less than ideal in real-world hunting situations. Some guys have been doing their own modifications to help with that, but I'd really prefer the maker to have that stuff sorted out already.

Based on the info in that forum thread, I've held off buying the BCA upper myself.

I tried one and found the same - bolt is spring loaded to release with light pressure. I also didn't want to grind on my upper to change that.

Further, they're about 3/4 lb heavier than the Solo, which I was fine with since I wanted to build a 6 ARC (which apparently doesn't run well in the Solo). However, as has been pointed out here, the 6x45 at 62k is ballistically about the same as a 6 ARC at 52k psi (their max pressures in an AR). So I'm sticking with the Solo as well.

I’m building what I would call a lightweight, not ultralight for my daughter. She likes shooting the ar platform and shoots it much better than traditional stocked rifles. She shoots right handed and doesn’t cycle the solo bolt very well. I put the bear creek with a 300 blk barrel and she really enjoys shooting it. Bigger scope with great eye relief. The ultimate plan is a 6x45 barrel to make it deer and elk legal in my state with low recoil. All of her shots will be 250 yards and in. I think it will be a 7lb total package. The blot doesn’t like to stay closed while carrying it around but I don’t know that I care because she won’t carry it loaded and the type of hunting I do with her won’t be too much bushwhacking where debris could get in the action.

I tried the single shot route with her as a light gun to carry but reloading for a follow up basically wasn’t an option. She cycles this well and isn’t scared of it. Hopefully get a barrel on it soon so she can practice more.
