I'm slowly reading through all the pages here with plans to build a ULUL 223. Since I can't get a Shaw barrel, what is the recommended barrel now?

Have you tried contacting Shaw to see if they can make one?

If they aren’t going to, the Faxon pencil match barrel I had was extremely accurate. Just gotta plug the gas port.

No. I didn't think Shaw would do it.

I would check with Shaw. Says temporarily unavailable, I would assume they just sold out of the last batch. If they know there's interest they'll likely do another run I'd imagine.

I forgot to bring the rifle up front for a picture, but I christened my ULUL 6x45 with its first kill last night. You can see it in the background. 300 yards, DRT. (Deer on the left)

Nice! What bullet did you use and how did it perform? (Obviously killed well, just wondering about penetration, exit size, if any, etc).

But for those curious, 16" X-caliber has the 90 gr ELD-X going 2,504 fps. So at 300 I was around 2,025 fps. Passed through quartered away from flank to behind front shoulder, just below the spine. Dropped immediately and never moved.

Well, this was a little underwhelming

I was expecting another couple hundy on those numbers.

I fired my first 50 shots with the 6x45 barrel today (the chrono group was 31-40). Averaging 2-ish inch groups. Not terrible, but not impressive, either.
I was consistently 10/10 on a 4" gong at 500 with my 7lb Tikka. 223, so I'm pretty sure it ain't me (although the lighter the rifle, the tougher I find it to shoot will, so it could've been....)
I'd be happy hunting with it inside of 200yds, as it sits & I'm sure that a couple of hundred more through the pipe will help tighten it up a bit!

Hornady told me 1,400, maybe down to 1,300 for that bullet. One of our resident 6x45 experts said 1,200 or even a bit lower. Sounds like 1,400 would be pretty safe.

Wondering if I could get a consensus on the best lightweight 15in handguard for a 6mm arc gun I am building. I am going to use a heavy cut barrel so looking at carbon fiber handguards around 7oz to drop some weight. I am looking at the Faxon and Jag sfh right now. Any other suggestions?

Smoke Composites is far better than Faxon, IMO.

Jag is about the lightest, I think. Mine have been very good.

I used a 15 inch handguard on mine because kids borrow my rifle and I could imagine a clumsy 13 year old leaning on it and bending the barrel. Still light. I think with a minimal stock it's 3 lbs 12oz bare, something like that. The folding stock adds weight and I use steel scope rings. As it sits it's around 6.5 lbs with a suppressor. The great thing about this system is you can have a few add ons or compromises and still be reasonably light. Haven't managed to kill anything with it yet.
