Where did you get those velcro sheaths from? Do you like them?

I got them from Kestrel when I bought the knives, and yeah, I like them a lot. I also got the Kydex sheaths, but I never use them because they’re almost as heavy as the knives themselves. The Velcro ones come rectangular in shape, but I just cut them down to match the shape of the knife, and shave off a little more weight.

Helium from R&N Blades, Kifaru might have some left in their store.

Aussie knifemaker, i have a couple and love them, hold a great edge. A mate has one to and was telling me his has dressed 2 red deer and caped one head before needing a touch up.

I own a couple of kestrels. The Ovis is an excellent blade shape I have grown to love. I have it in the handled version and I love it. S30v is a great steel.
Makes me want to pick up a mini skeleton Ovis but I don’t need another knife at all.

I have a few spyderco folders with S90v and hey hold a wicked edge. Though if you get them really dull they take a bit more effort with a proper system and technique to get them going good again. S30v is more forgiving with still great retention. I’ve done multiple deer in a day with mine. It shouldn’t be an issue to handle something bigger.

Nathan @ kestrel did just release that mountain scalpel. Without the sheeth and a 60a blade it weighs 17grams. I can have it and 5 packed blades at 1oz of pack weight. Easy to clean and nicely made.

For a backpack style hunt I can handle the scalpel route. I don’t really want to pack a sharpener or painters stick with sand paper glued to it.

I backpacked into a place last year, set up camp and was clearing a spot to cook dinner and found two discarded blades. I would hope everyone on here is packing out those old blades.

I don’t bother packing a khydex sheath with a scalpel handle, just pack the foil packs that the 60as come in. When you are done with the scalpel you can put the blade into the old foil pack and pack the shit out.

Does anyone know if u can get the kestrel knives without the Jimping. I like the smooth handle and blade in the photos above but on their website, I don’t see that as an option.

I can easily sharpen my high quality particle steel knives with the Edge Pro; S30v, Elmax, S90v - etc

I also prefer scales on a knife....there comes a point where ultra light weight loses its functionality for me.....YMMV

+1 - I have a Ti skeleton knife but the handle just doesn't do it for me even when conditions are warm and dry. Can't imagine what it would feel like in cold rain!

Do either of you mind posting a picture of the iron will in your hand, and maybe show the thickness. I’m really tempted but I don’t really need another knife
