What is everyones preference for a solid ul tent stake? Up where i am usually atwe deal with lots of rocks and moderate to high winds so I have been using the MSR groundhogs for the last couple years but am thinking of trying the mini groundhogs this summer. Just don' know if they will hold as well or if there might be something better out there.

Mini ground hogs are great. Depending on shelter they may be enough.

I usually carry a few regular groundhogs along with a few mini groundhogs for my tarp. If I know I'm going to be on hard ground I just carry the minis.

Worth a try. What shelter are you using them on?

I use them either on my BA copper spur ul 2 or on my mega tarp, i really have liked the original groundhogs and how they handle the winds above timberline but am looking to see if i can trim some more weight. I see they redesigned them this year and made them lighter but still not as light as the mini's.

MSR groundhogs and mini groundhogs for me...

x2 - I've used a ton of different ones (Easton, Kelty, Terra Nova, Vargo) and I keep coming back to the MSR groundhogs. Just can't beat them for durability and price.

Same story here. I've experimented with stakes more with DB blinds than tents but keep going back to the same ones. I have a pile of groundhog stakes at home and grab a handful anytime I need to stake out a hunting blind, tent, awning, tarp, _____. They simply hold their ground (so long as you use enough of them and don't try to get by with too few stakes for the application).

What would you reccomend for use on tundra like ground so that they do not pull out easily in high winds?

have you noticed any reall difference in holding power on a tarp in moderately firm ground between the regular or the mini's though?

Mini Groundhogs and Groundhogs work great. Gotta watch the mini's though and don't pound them in the ground a lot using a rock. Bent a couple and broke one off at the neck doing that. I also like the Easton Nano a lot. Had one of the heads pull off, but the rest worked fine, so at this point don't really have a preference.

I use Easton Nano 8" at the corners @ 12grams each and about $2.50 a piece. They are pretty durable, but can bend in really rocky terrain, I've actually had them bend around rocks before though and hold really good. For guyouts I use the 6.5" Vargo Ti @ 8grams each and about $3.00 a piece.

I am going to try some of the MSR carbon core stakes this year, which are only 5 grams but at $7.50 a piece I hope they hold up.

I have spent about eighty days in the tundra up here in Alaska over the last couple years. Also tried lots of different stakes. I have been bringing the groundhogs with me for when we get to firm ground but when moose hunting on tundra we always go back to using willows jammed in the ground about 18 ". The last two years for moose season I brought stakes and never used them once. On the float hunts we have used a lot of driftwood. Seams harder and slides in the ground better. Tekla
