What's your thoughts on taking tylenol pm to help sleep in the bsckcountry? I've seen a couple times online where they take a couple of these to help them sleelp

i always take it. helps me sleep like a baby. im someone who has trouble sleeping if im not in my own bed. tylenol helps with sore aches and pains. melatonin is another option but i seem to have crazy dreams when i take that

I've been experimenting with melatonin to see if I could use it this season. I had a fawn kick my a$$ while its momma bit me with her giant teeth the first night. I would say that definitely qualifies as a crazy dream.

The diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is available at Wal-Mart listed as Equate allergy relief. It comes in a double pack of two bottles of 100 tablets each for $4.99. It also comes in capsules, but I find taking 1 1/2 tablets allows me to fall asleep, and rest well. I occasionally take the Melatonin (no more than 3 mg), and that helps too, but as others have said, nightmares result if I take more than 3 mg.

You can get sleep aids over the counter and skip the pain med portion unless you need that too.

Correct, anything "PM" typically contains diphenhydramine, i.e. Benadryl. However, each may have different dosages of Diphenhydramine contained inside the pill.

Tylenol PM - contains 25mg of Diphenhydramine per pill
Advil PM - contains 38mg of Diphenhydramine per pill
Some Ibuprofrens - will either contain 25mg or 38mg.

If you don't need the anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs (Iburprofren/Advil/Aleve) then just buy the generic Diphenhydramine at Walmart or Sams. Buying name brand Benadryl will cost you 2-3 times normal cost of the generic. Thats the cheapest places I have seen it. I typically take both Tylenol and an NSAID (usually Aleve) into the field with me. Then I'll count up the number of nights and select one of the combination "PM pills" from above so I end up taking less pills over all.

I should’ve read this last night before I took two NyQuil to help sleep and with my congestion. I still feel tired and I slept for 7hrs and change.

I took nyquil or something similar once, woke up a couple hours later and felt like absolute garbage, only time in my life I thought I was actually sick! Had the sweats and the shakes.

Never again for me! Who knows what that garbage is doing to your liver?

I never take anything at home but take 1/2 of one in the mountains. A whole one gives me the early morning drowsies. Typically you are uncomfortable and spent so sleep is critical.
The active ingredient is Benadryl so I have them along for bee stings also.

Benadryl affects every one differently. I can take 2 tablets and not feel drowsy at all. If my wife takes half a tablet she is out drooling for 24 hours LOL

I'd take benadryl or a generic equivalent instead unless you need the pain relief as well.

I almost always have to take something my first few nights sleeping anywhere other than my own bed, especially at altitude

Im gonna try the Mtn Ops sleepy chai this year, benadryl will be backup in case it doesn't work like I hoped. I too have a hard time sleeping in the backcountry. I have never wanted to take anything, but this year I want some better sleep.
