I know the difference is extremely minimal but where is it best to measure length to target from, end of barrel or turrets?
Bryan Litz from Applied Ballistics says turrets. A Hornady podcast about 4Dof says end of barrel.

It doesn’t matter as long as you are consistent across all ranges… for me it’s easier to be consistent being level with the turrets.

Since we are picking fly poop out of pepper… being at the turret and at rifle level also forces a more accurate angle calculation.

Never considered it. I've always measured by end of muzzle. I guess turrets would be "better", because your adjustments and measurements are being made in the scope, based off bullet impact... makes the location of your muzzle rather irrelevant.

With that said, like the above posts, there's no way in hell that 16" to 22" difference would ever make enough difference for me to care. Other variables like being level to your target or inaccurate RF readings are probably the same if not more of a concern.

Interesting post though, never thought about that.

When you range a target(animal etc) to shoot it, you range it from your person. And your person isn’t standing where your muzzle is, it’s right next to the scope..so for that reasoning I’d say you use the scope…but like has already been said, Im not good enough to shoot that difference.

I honestly have no idea what we are talking about.

Me either. Shooting at a target/animal 832 yards away and I'm gonna figure "No it's 832 1/2 yards from my scope so I will account for that". How much do you allow for the difference in 18" in a FFP scope?

Edited to ask: And if you have a spotter, how does he even............ O never mind.

We are talking about 18-24 inches
So just so I have a proper understanding as to what this thread is about.....

We are asking, if your range to a target, should come from the turret of your gun, or the end of the barrel. Which in 100% of circumstances is less than one yard. The unit of measurement that we use to calculate ballistics to begin with?

Man people would be really pissed that I pick the average elevation of where I am hunting to generate a dope card. If we are trying to account for a difference between the turret and the end of the barrel, people will be shocked to hear about the mule deer I center punched at 650 yards this year at 6500 feet, with a dope card that was calibrated for 8000 feet.

And if it was 34* instead of 59*? They would want you to wait until 3 pm when it will be 59* to take the shot I guess.

I was super confused when I read this..... are we really talking about ranging animalsor targets from the end of your barrel or from your scope?! You must be a waaaaay better shooter than me. Also dont forget if you lay down prone and fart to shoot your range again, you might of moved an inch

That would be one hell of a fart.
