So ordered a new turkey gun today. Winchester SX4 28” 3.5” chambered 12ga. Shoulder doesn’t like the 10ga anymore. My question is does anyone have a choke suggestion for this gun? Primarily have shot 2oz #5s in a 3” 12ga my son uses with a .670 Kicks GT choke. I also have a .660 Jellyhead. Obviously I will pattern it myself, just wondering on everyone’s take on the 3.5” vs 3” differences. Kicks recommends the .675 for 3.5”. How much difference do you think it will make .670 vs .675??

Those Winchesters are back bored barrels so they are larger bore diameter than normal. I’d be thinking about a .670 or .675 Indian Creek

Well I have a .670, really wondered about the .675. If the difference would be minimal or substantial.

I dunno?
I shot a Rem 870 w/aftermarket X-Full choke.
Never shot anything but 2.75" high velocity (1200 fps) with 1 1/8 ounce of plain Jane lead #8's.

Other than fall birds with a .22 Mag or .22 Hornet, I killed all shotgun birds with #8's.
The only exception was this bird that fell to a Win M12 16 gauge w/factory full choke and a 1 ounce load of #7.5's

5 thou can make all the difference in turkey chokes.
That’s kinda what I thought. I’ll just see how the .670 performs and venture out from there if needed. Knowing my luck, it’s gonna turn into an expensive experiment.

I have a SXP turkey with a 24" barrel and a long beard xr choke by carlsons. It patters great with 3.5 long beard xr and I have shot turkeys at 55yds+

Is it too late to cancel your order? A Remington 870 Compact 20 gauge with a 21” barrel and an Indian Creek .555 choke with 1 5/8oz of #9s will give you around 300 pellets in a 10” circle at 40 yards. 👍

I use an Indian Creek .555 in my 20ga Benelli M2 which is an extremely tight choke. I shoot TSS through it with no problems. You should be fine with any properly loaded tss turkey load.

I use a 870 with a slug barrel with a Extra full turkey Comp N Choke and TSS #9's. A long barrel catching every cedar tree limb I duck under makes me cuss to much and drives me crazy. The gun works good for me but I have never shot past 40 yards at a bird

I don't have a problem with folks using TSS shot, but not everybody wants or can afford to spend that much money on turkey 🦃 specific ammo.

I bought 2 five round boxes of Fed .410, #9 TSS.
SIXTY BUCKS + SHIPPING!!!
$6/shell

A 25 box of Win 12 gauge 1250fps, 1 1/8 oz of #8's was $12.95+tax!
+/- .55 cents/shell

Both do a tremendous job killing turkeys!

On a budget, which purchase makes the most sense?

It’s never fully made sense to me, but individual guns and chokes vary so much I think you just have to test for yourself until you find something you are satisfied with. If the pattern is dense enough to kill a turkey I wouldn’t chase finding the perfect combo.

I made the switch to a Stevens 301 this year and man the ammo costs especially tss.. but I gotta say the pattern is incredible at 30. And that’s with their stoke.

The shotgun industry has long ago decided that each "choke" is a specific set of measurements for each gauge.
I'm like you. I can't see that a specific measurement can reliably deliver a specific pattern.
With any shotgun, you need to test an unknown to see what it's capable of.

My Kicks .670 worked fine… put the smack down on an Eastern last week.
