Tuning speed for Iron Will Wide

I have been a mechanical shooter for some time until the last while when some pain had me decide on 60 pounds over the 72-76 I was at.

I have two Arc 34 bows with 60 pound mods that pull 62 and 63 respectively.

I’m hitting 274-276 fps.

I have not started shooting broadheads yet and have bought standard and wide Iron Wills with solid blades on both.

Been hearing that sub 270 fps is much easier to tune them and since I have no experience doing so, I’m debating on getting 55 pound mods (pulling 57 and 58) and getting speed into the mid 260’s.

For those who have experience with these heads, do you agree on the speed and ease of tuning?

I’m much more concerned with a perfect flying arrow than one going a little faster.

Thanks.

I doubt you'll have much trouble tuning those heads at speeds in the mid-270s. If you do have trouble, why not just back off the limb bolts a turn or two instead of swapping mods?

You should be able to tune those no problem at 275. If you have to you can always use a bigger vane 4 fletched.

I shot the IW wide last year at 275fps and they flew perfectly with my field points. Like with anything though, attention to detail in arrow building is important.

- make sure all of your arrows spin true with broadheads installed. You might be surprised at how easily an insert can bend. I’ve even recently discovered some bent titanium inserts in my batches of arrows. Remove and replace bent inserts.

- nock tune your arrows. If you have an arrow that doesn’t group with the others, try rotating the nock 120* until it tunes, or cull that arrow if it doesn’t.

- if you have inserts that accept FAC weights, experiment with adding weights to achieve the best down range consistency. Be aware though of generating high FOC can become problematic if you have long or tall canes that generate more lift. High FOC and high lift canes are not a good match. The canes will cause over correction. My build that worked well for me last year was actually 22% FOC, but I used a 2.25” Tac Vane, which has right around 0.43 vane height. So a stiff, but short and not tall vane.

For the last few months I’ve been shooting Magnus Black Hornet Ser Razors, which are 1 1/4” wide. I’m shooting those at 290fps and they group right with field points with file points and broadheads touching shafts at 30 yards. I don’t think arrow speed is an issue so long as the vane and broadheads combination is right, and the bow is well tuned.

Four vanes and fixed heads can be problematic. That much vane creates excessive lift and causes over-correction if there’s the least bit of wind, or if any torque is applied to the bow.
