Well I didnt think it would happen to me, but it did...

Thieves hit my Tundra in broad daylight at my office, and apparently they are very bad or just didn't care because they also cut into the frame when stealing the cat convertors. My insurance advised it would be best to total the truck out and offered a generous payout.

So now I find my self with a new to me Tundra and not wanting a repeat experience.

There are a couple different vendors selling bolt on plates that in theory should deter thieves. Most are either Aluminum (3/16 or 1/8) but some are 1/8 stainless steel.

Does anyone have any first hand recommendations? I have not looked into welded on plates but I know that is an option as well.

Sucks about your truck. I assume they were using a recip saw or angle grinder. If so the frame should be pretty easy to get welded up. You might want to consider asking the insurance company to let you buy it back.

As for the plate, I'm of no help, seems like a good idea in theory, but would it connect with the skid from the engine or separate, also watch for dissimilar metals mating together and if it would collect mud/road salt. Recipe for rust if any of the above are true.

Can't help you with your question, but locally law enforcement is advising to inscribe your information onto the cat to deter thieves.

Stupid question that I should no the answer to as my wife and I drive tundras. Then I have tundras for work vehicles. Why do thieves seem to seek out tundras? Are the easier to access or maybe bigger cats. I hear about this all the time and frankly just never asked. A month ago they came through and hit a companies fleet of trucks down the road. 16 total. I just remember sitting in my office the next morning thinking i was at the talladega 500 as they all drove by.

Good guy that does great work. They double as skid plates too.

These seem to be the most popular that I have seen.

I know a couple of people with them installed and I have been looking at them for my Sequoia.

There a guy locally here making and selling them.. I put it on my Tundra, just heard too many horror stories. It's a bolt on variety, but no reason the bolts couldn't be welded over or some security bolts purchased. If nothing else, going to take them a little longer to get to the cats which hopefully means they'll just move on and leave my shit alone.

I think I know whom your referring too if he is in Houston. I likely will be going though him since I can pick up directly instead of going the shipping route.

I went back and forth about just keeping the truck and getting it repaired myself. But she was getting up there in age and miles. Still plenty of life left for a Tundra, but there was a few things that I needed to get replaced / fixed. Plus Ive got two kids with another on the way and upgrading to a crew max was probably going to be needed sooner than later.

Do not need to worry about salt very often in Texas, and I prefer to do all my oil changes my self so I will be able to inspect every 5k miles or so for rust or clumps of dried mud.

@Southern Heritage Tundras have a higher precious metal content in their CC’s vs. other trucks/cars. Prius and Sequoias get hit hard also. Very very common for Tundras to lose their CCs. I’m on a few of the Texas Tundra pages/SATC and it’s unbelievably common.

To the OP, I’d recommend a cat cover from Desert Eagle Offroad (DFW area).

I had a Prius I bought because the cat was stolen off of it. I got one on there and my buddy built a cage around it of rebar.

About 2 months ago a few of my neighbors had their cats stolen off of their cars. I checked my camera and watched a guy back right up to the prius and shine a flashlight under it. He got in his car and drove off.

What is the $ these thieves are getting for a CC? A while ago I looked into a skid plate for entire underneath. I’ll post a link if I can find the one I was interested in.
