TSS Shot

I picked up a new shotgun built specifically for TSS shot. However, I need to sight it in and TSS is hard to come by (I've called 20 stores) and $15 a round last I purchased. Can I sight it in or pattern it with lead #8 birdshot and then verify with one round of TSS? Any thoughts?

That’s what I did with my red dot sight. It worked like a charm. I think I had to move it like 2 clicks with TSS. I wouldn’t say pattern it though.

Yes, that's how we do it with all of our shotguns using TSS. Saves your wallet and your shoulder. Cousin sent me a pic of his first bird of the year earlier. 50yds with a 20ga shooting 8/10 blend Nitro TSS.

You can sight it in close. Depending on the range the TSS is going to hit higher than lead.

Mine shoots field loads 7.5s the same as TSS at 20 yards. It is high at 40 but not enough to be an issue. I aim at the head inside 30 and 35-40 I aim for the waddles.

I saw some Federal at sportsmans yesterday, 70 bux for 5, holy chit! Load my own for 5-6 bux a piece!

40 yards, not bad, like 6".

60 might be 18".


Use a larger lead shot that retains energy a bit better than #8 and it won't be as drastic. But if you are trying to use #8 lead launched at 1275 fps, and then switch to #8 TSS launched at 1150 fps, the down range speeds are a good bit different.

Your gun can shoot anything, TSS is harder so many chokes out there cant shoot it. Any choke that can shoot TSS can shoot anything softer.

This last week was my first experience with TSS for turkey. I have a youth 870 20 gauge set up with a Carlsons TSS choke for my 8 year old son to use. We practiced and patterned it with dove loads through the TSS choke. We then went hunting and I put in a 3" TSS in the gun and didn't tell him. He absolutely hammered a big tom at 30 yards with it. I didn't pattern the TSS shell, probably should have, but it worked perfectly.

this is my 3rd season using it. I was shooting a 12g using TSS 9 but now i'm using a 28 gauge shooting 1oz tss #9. Its highly effective and I'll continue to hand roll TSS loads. I use a 28g Beretta A400 with a Carlson .505 turkey. At 20 yards 95% of pellets are in a 4" circle. I smacked a turkey in the head at 40 yards last season.

Yes lead #4 works at 40 yards but pellet count ain't the same as #9.. For those that don't know, #9 TSS has the same takedown power as #4 lead. I certainly try to get my turkeys at sub 20 yards but sometimes its not in cards.

Been loading my own now for 8-9 years. Once you buy all the components the only expense is buying the shot. Found 18g/cc for 40.00 a pound if anyone in interested in shot.

I don't know how bp's data is with tss, but with regular steel it's proceed with caution.

They have published several loads with steel shot that are later found to be over pressure, apparently they have a history of extrapolating data.

It doesn't help that lots of steel powder vary too.

I have newbie's shoot a birdshot or two just to see if you're pulling the shot. Put the trigger on your first digit and not in the crease.
Once you're comfortable with birdshots hitting where you want it then load the TSS.

My son was practicing with snap caps for the single shot 410 I bought last night. I was having him practice lowering the hammer back down without shooting. The first time he tried it slipped. I said "there was a ten dollar mistake." I have only shot lead through mine. I should probably fire one of the golden shells, but just the thought of it makes my wallet hurt.
