I’ve shot some birds that I thought were neat over the years—a banded drake pintail, a hybrid wigeon, and some others—but my favorite bird isn’t near as cool as what y’all have posted.
I’ve wanted a hunting dog as long as I can remember. As a kid my parents only wanted a family dog and while they were great friends, they weren’t a hunting dog. As an adult I was never in a situation where it made sense to get one. A couple years ago I made a deal with my wife that I could get one. I did a lot of reading on bloodlines and looking at pedigrees, and finally put down a deposit down on a pup. Over a year later, I got to take my boy Duke home. I spent all spring and summer training to get him ready for his first hunting season. There’s definitely some things I could have done a better job with training, and he was a long ways from perfect on his first hunt, but watching him bring back his first duck was pretty cool.
It was only a 25-30 yard retrieve on an eclipse plumage teal, but it’s definitely my favorite bird I’ve shot.
