As an eastern hunter accustomed to the tight confines of the "big woods", I did not have a spotter nor any real experience using one prior to my BC mountain goat hunt last August. I added a spotter (Swarovski 20-65x) at the last moment (a deal I couldn't turn down) just before leaving for the trip and added a Manfrotto Mt055XPro3 tripod with a Manfrotto 128RC head on the advice of the local optics store.

Althought it performed well, the tripod seemed bulky and heavy for what is a relatively small spotting scope. Are there better options that still retain the stability needed to glass effecitvely?

I have a Slik CF634 that I love.
Weighs a mere 2lb, packs down tiny, can range from a couple inches tall to about 5' and has held everything I set on it.
I've used it for a spotting scope, crossbow, and big dslr glass.
Extra stable when you hook your pak to the center post.

The BEST bet would be the Promaster X-CM 522C. Carbon fiber 2lbs 4 ounces with the head, folds to 12 " and can hold 11 Pounds. Normally $239.99, members here pay $209.99. It has a 3 year no fault warranty that we extend to 5 years. If you wanted a fluid head then you can add the Promaster SPCH20 head, normally $89.99, only $79.99 for members

Call me if I can be of any help
