Middle finger for me. Winn Free Flight and I wrap my index finger around and trigger it with the middle finger, I found less tendency to punch the trigger that way.

I''m headed this way. I have normal target panic and my wifes got really bad with a wrist strap. Starting with a fresh slate and new thumb releases by Carter.

You won't be disappointed. It will fix Target panic as long as you commit to a surprise release EVERY shot. A great resource for me has been John Dudley's youtube videos. I went with a Carter Too Simple and just got a First Choice which has a slightly longer head. I actually wish I would have gone with a tension activated release right away, I think it would have shortened the learning curve on truly pulling through the shot.

All I've ever shot is a trigger, but am going to try the Carter Nock2It (Thumb) and Silverback (Tension) this year for practice. Unsure if they'll make the cut for hunting.

I sold my Carter simple 1 since I know have the nock2it and silverback, well worth the money

I switched to a thumb release about a year ago. My groups are tighter by far, primarily because I can truly find my anchor point faster and there is no variation in it at any point. The space between the knuckles of my index and middle finger fits perfectly above the angle of my jaw and is pushed up against my mastoid.

Thanks for the comments. I've been listening to the Nock On pod casts and youtube videos as well as picked a Nock to it. I haven't been able to get a Silverback yet. I really like Dudley and his Nock On brand/trainings.

I have target panic with a thumb release, but not an index finger. Only you know what works for you!

Trigger set light for me.
I tried a Stan and two different Chocolates and could not do it.

Trufire Hardcore and Carter Like Mike work for me.

It's really about how each person's brain works, some guys index finger/thumb/pinky...heck some are shooting hinge releases while hunting. If you've had TP, then the brain has to be retrained...or consciously fake yourself out, by removing the smart muscles(index)and using the dumb ones(thumb, pinky, middle).

I shoot guns great with index(obviously), but a bout with TP changed my bow shooting style. Make sure it fits right, set the thumb post correctly in your hand, and give it an honest try...even thumb releases can be punched/popped/hammered.

I shoot both fairly well. However, I do still think I am more consistent day in and day out with a index finger release. I have wondered why for the last few years and the only thing that makes any logical sense is due to the more secure anchor. Now I can be very secure with a thumb but I notice the difference when i am more in different awkward positions making a shot. Then with a thumb I have to have my A game on to be on the money. Where with an index finger release I find it more forgiving, probably due to the more secure anchor as well.
I also feel a thumb release when in awkward or uneven terrain can cause you to have slight variances in your left and right impacts. This may be caused from the variances in torque from left to right while trying to maintain that anchor. Where the index finger anchor point makes it hard to go outside that pocket, even when in awkward situations.

Just some things to consider when your looking at both options for hunting

I don't think I would ever hunt without an index finger release.
